The Spider-Man franchise is currently thriving, thanks to hits like the Spider-Verse movies and the ongoing stories within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Following the massive success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Tom Holland will reprise his role as Peter Parker this summer in Brand New Day. While Holland is a familiar face, Spider-Man: Brand New Day marks a fresh start for the series, with Destin Daniel Cretton directing instead of Jon Watts.
As a huge Spider-Man fan, I’ve always been a little bummed that certain amazing storylines haven’t gotten the attention they deserved in the movies. But things are finally looking up! It seems like one of the most beloved eras of Spider-Man comics might finally be coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and I’m really hoping they’ll do it justice.
The Spider-Man Franchise Hasn’t Been Perfect
With so many Spider-Man movies already made, the current success of the character within the Marvel Cinematic Universe is largely due to past missteps by Sony. The issues started in 2007 when they tried to bring the classic symbiote storyline to life. However, Spider-Man 3 didn’t give the symbiote the focus it deserved, as the movie was already crowded with too many villains and plot threads, and ultimately fell short of the quality set by the earlier Sam Raimi films.
Since then, no Spider-Man film has really explored the symbiote storyline in depth. However, Sony did create a successful solo series starring Tom Hardy as Venom, but…
Following the success of the movie Venom, Sony began making more films centered around villains from the Spider-Man universe. Kraven the Hunter was one of these, but unfortunately, it didn’t do well in theaters. Because of this, it’s unlikely we’ll see Aaron Taylor-Johnson reprise the role of Kraven in future films.
Sony’s Past Failures Create an Exciting Opportunity in the MCU
As a huge MCU fan, I think they really nailed the Spider-Man reboot. Connecting him to the wider universe, updating his story for today, and giving it that fun, John Hughes vibe was brilliant. But what always makes Spider-Man special is his ability to handle really dark and complex stories – he’s just such an iconic character. And after that tease in Spider-Man: No Way Home with the symbiote, I’m really excited about where they could go next, especially with a potential Brand New Day storyline where Peter feels totally alone.
Spider-Man first wore the black symbiote suit in the comic book event Secret Wars, and with the Marvel Cinematic Universe adapting that storyline, it’s a great opportunity to introduce it on screen. In the comics, Spider-Man wore the suit for almost four years, and the MCU could do the same. The symbiote could appear during Avengers: Secret Wars, and then play a major role in Spider-Man’s next solo movie, drawing from one of the most important storylines in the character’s history.
The recent Spider-Man 2 game offered a fresh take on the character, and now the Marvel Cinematic Universe could explore a similar path. With no plans for a sequel to Kraven the Hunter, Marvel Studios has a clear opportunity to introduce the character in a Spider-Man movie, and fans seem eager for a new version.
The Spider-Man movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe could benefit from a similar revitalization as the one Thor received with Ragnarök. With Avengers: Secret Wars coming up, adapting the Kraven’s Last Hunt storyline and revisiting Venom would be smart moves. While the MCU doesn’t always stick to the comics, ignoring these stories now would be a real missed chance. The timing is perfect, making you wonder if this was the plan all along.
