Okay, so I just finished episode 4 of Mayor of Kingstown season 4, and wow. Hugh Dillon, who created the show and plays Ian, explained why Ian nearly killed Evelyn. It was a shocking moment – he actually dropped a brick onto her car from an overpass! Thankfully, she survived, but she ended up seriously injured and in the hospital. Dillon talked about the reasoning behind it, and it really sheds light on what Ian was thinking. It was a pretty intense scene, to say the least.
Dillon, speaking with ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley, and his co-star Laura Benanti, shared that their character, Ian, thinks Mike has weaknesses in season 4 of Mayor of Kingstown. Since Evelyn is investigating Ian regarding Morrissey’s death, Ian feels his actions are understandable. He clarified that he only intended to frighten Evelyn into abandoning the investigation, not to harm her.
Liam Crowley asked: I have two quick questions about upcoming episodes. In episode 404, it’s revealed that Ian caused Evelyn’s accident. What motivated him to act outside of his usual plan?
Hugh Dillon believes Mike is being misguided. He feels that Ian consistently tries to ‘fix’ what he perceives as Mike’s weaknesses, thinking Mike can’t see his own problems. However, Dillon points out that Ian’s attempts to help always fail.
Laura Benanti: And he didn’t kill her. He scared her.
Hugh Dillon explained that the object was placed on the passenger seat. He reasoned that if someone intended to harm her, they would have put it on the driver’s side instead.
At the end of Mayor of Kingstown season 3, Evelyn started investigating Ian. Her suspicions arose after Ian shot Charlie and she learned he may have been involved in Morrissey’s murder. Ian claimed he was with the serial killer at a dentist appointment that day, but the dental records didn’t confirm his story.
Knowing Mike wouldn’t want him to stop Evelyn from speaking out – they were very close – he decided to handle the situation himself. Mike became suspicious during a meeting with Ian and Robert, which quickly became an argument. He directly asked Ian if he’d tried to harm Evelyn, but Ian insisted he hadn’t.

Ian did tell Stevie what he was up to, making Stevie the only person besides Ian who knew his plans. Ian also believes he knows who Evelyn’s witness is and intends to intimidate them into silence. But considering how badly his previous attempts to protect himself have gone, things are likely to fall apart soon.
Evelyn doesn’t think the damage to her car is connected to her legal battle with Ian, so she’s carrying on with her work as normal. Dillon and Benanti believe someone intentionally damaged her car to intimidate her, but it doesn’t seem to have worked. Now that Mike is suspicious, everything the detective does will be closely watched.
Because Ian is facing a potential life sentence if found guilty, he’s probably not going to turn himself in. Instead, season 4 of Mayor of Kingstown will likely show him taking increasingly desperate measures to protect himself. It’s unclear if his actions will harm or even kill others along the way.
New episodes of Mayor of Kingstown season 4 arrive Sundays on Paramount+.
