Be warned, the following contains spoilers for the season 4 finale of Mayor of Kingstown, episode 10, “Belly of the Beast”! The season concluded with a final, decisive moment for the complex relationship between Callahan and Kyle, and the actors are now discussing how it all ended. After Kyle shot Robert Sawyer in season 3, much of the latest season focused on Kyle’s difficult adjustment to prison life, and Jeremy Renner’s character, Mike, desperately trying to secure his release.
As a huge fan of Mayor of Kingstown, I was completely gripped by season four. The first part of the season really focused on Richard Brake’s Callahan trying to pull Kyle into the Aryan Brotherhood – he wanted Kyle as leverage against Mike. But when Kyle refused, things got brutal. Callahan escaped and, in one of the most shocking scenes, tracked down and murdered Kyle’s wife, Tracy, while Kyle was still on the phone with her. The season finale was incredibly satisfying though. We finally saw Mike get his brother out of prison, and with some help from Ian Ferguson, he managed to put Callahan right in front of Kyle. Kyle finally got his revenge, brutally beating and ultimately killing the villain. It was a powerful and fitting end to their conflict.
To mark the end of the season, Liam Crowley from ScreenRant spoke with Taylor Handley and Richard Brake about the finale of Mayor of Kingstown. Handley, when discussing Kyle’s mindset during the dramatic confrontation with Callahan, said that his character was driven by revenge. He explained that Kyle had begun to overcome his initial shock and was clear about his intentions heading into the scene.
Taylor Handley believes Kyle is struggling with an internal conflict. While a part of him knows what’s right, the overwhelming feelings of hate and anger are taking over. It’s a sad and very human moment, showing a raw, almost instinctive side of the character that he can’t control.
A surprising moment in the final showdown between Callahan and Kyle was seeing Callahan, after being shot and held at gunpoint, break down and plead for his life. According to Brake, this was a crucial turning point for the character. It was particularly impactful because Callahan had repeatedly claimed to have no fear of death and often referenced philosophical ideas about it, making his desperate pleas all the more revealing of his true nature.
Richard Brake explained that the final scene with his character, Merle, was deeply emotional because Merle is genuinely terrified of dying. He believes much of Merle’s behavior is a front to hide his fear, but at his core, he’s still human. Kyle brought out this vulnerability, which Brake feels the audience needs to see after everything Merle has done. He described the scene as incredibly powerful to play, especially opposite Taylor, who elevated it with his performance.

The ending of Mayor of Kingstown season 4 wasn’t just about Callahan’s death; it also showed positive changes for several of the show’s more likable characters. Notably, Tobi Bamtefa’s character, Bunny, made significant progress in his fight to control the town’s gangs, successfully disrupting a major Colombian drug cartel and aiding Mike in getting Frank Moses (played by Lennie James) imprisoned. This also improved Mike’s standing with Nina Hobbs (Edie Falco) and helped him maintain control over the town’s prison system.
However, most significantly, Callahan’s death adds another painful loss for the McLusky family. The season 3 finale of Mayor of Kingstown powerfully showed Mike killing Milo, finally ending their long-standing conflict. Combined with Konstantin’s death, this also eliminates the Russian threat and avenges Mariam’s death from season 2.
Although it hasn’t been officially renewed, the show’s creator, Dillon, has talked about a plan for seven seasons of Mayor of Kingstown. The next season will focus on the difficult emotional journey of Kyle after he killed Callahan. He’ll have to navigate life after prison, including the loss of his job as a police officer, and raise his son with Tracy on his own, all against the backdrop of a brewing conflict between local gangs and a powerful Colombian cartel. With season 4 receiving the best reviews so far, there’s growing support for continuing the series.
