May 2025’s Blockbusters: Must-See Films Hitting Theaters This Spring
Just like a famous ’90s pop star sang, it’s almost May. The season for blockbuster movies is upon us! What could be more refreshing than escaping the heat by visiting a cinema? Despite the popularity of streaming platforms in recent years, there’s something truly captivating about watching a movie on the big screen – it’s how most directors want their work to be experienced.
If you’re a Marvel enthusiast, a dedicated Disney fan, or simply enjoy seeing Tom Cruise perform breathtaking feats, here are some of the most thrilling movies hitting the big screen this coming May.
‘Thunderbolts*’
Watch It in Theaters on May 2
Looking back, it’s astonishing that Marvel didn’t create a team of anti-heroes like The Suicide Squad earlier. Even the Guardians of the Galaxy, despite their imperfections, generally exhibited heroic behavior. However, the heroism of the main characters in Thunderbolts may not be as clear-cut.
*Note: Thunderbolts is a fictional team appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The team consists mainly of supervillains who have been deceived into thinking they are heroes, or villains who have genuinely reformed and joined forces to fight crime.
In the upcoming movie, “Thunderbolts,” featuring characters like Florence Pugh’s Yelena, David Harbour’s Red Guardian from “Black Widow”, Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) who’s known from “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”, and John Walker (Wyatt Russell), audiences can expect a perilous joint mission. Marvel has hinted that not every character may survive this adventure. The marketing strategy, reminiscent of A24, has been engaging, and fans are eagerly anticipating the release on May 2nd.
*Note: Thunderbolts is the name of a fictional team in the Marvel Universe, but it’s not officially confirmed if that’s the title of this movie.
‘Shadow Force’
Watch It in Theaters on May 9
It’s been quite some time since we’ve had a raw, action-packed adventure from director Joe Carnahan, like his film “The Grey”, and it seems that “Shadow Force” will scratch that itch. The story revolves around spies Kyrah and Isaac, portrayed by Kerry Washington and Omar Sy, who head the eponymous group – a multinational special forces unit.
In the style of spy novels, love becomes their vulnerability, causing them to flee with their child while simultaneously fending off their superiors. The diverse ensemble features Mark Strong, Method Man, and Academy Award-winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph. If you’re seeking an exhilarating action thriller, Shadow Force might just be the movie for you when it premieres in cinemas on May 9.
‘Hurry Up Tomorrow’
Watch It in Theaters on May 16
Following the release of his last (and potentially final) self-titled album, Abel Tesfaye, famously known as The Weeknd, is set to debut in the world of cinema with the film “Hurry Up Tomorrow”. This movie, directed by Trey Edward Shults who has garnered praise for his independent hits like “It Comes at Night” and “Waves”, is rumored to be inspired by the album’s general theme and delve into a fictional portrayal of Tesfaye grappling with insomnia.
A personal adventure commences as he meets an enigmatic character, portrayed by Barry Keoghan. Reports suggest that Shults and Tesfaye drew substantial inspiration from the album “Purple Rain“, viewing it as the film’s soundtrack. Although his acting career didn’t start smoothly with “The Idol“, here’s crossing our fingers that “Hurry Up Tomorrow” will serve as Tesfaye’s redemption when it premieres on May 16.
‘Lilo and Stitch’
Watch It in Theaters on May 23
It appears that many people have grown weary of Disney’s continuous flow of live-action remakes. Yet, despite this fatigue, these movies continue to attract viewers. This summer, we’ll be treated to a new version of Lilo and Stitch, which, it should be noted, seems more appealing than many of their recent productions. Similar to the beloved 2002 animated film, this movie tells the story of Lilo, a young girl living in Hawaii, who discovers that her new pet is actually an alien.
Dean Fleischer Camp, who was behind the heartwarming 2022 movie “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On”, is leading this new project that shares the same charming humor as the original film and the quirky spirit it embodies. Get ready for a delightful throwback as Lilo and Stitch arrives on May 23, perfect timing for Memorial Day!
‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’
Watch It in Theaters on May 23
This coming summer, another chance arises for us to witness Tom Cruise performing death-defying stunts on the big screen. Following directly from the end of 2023’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, the film titled The Last Standoff seems destined to be a thrilling and action-packed (presumably) conclusion to nearly three decades of the Mission: Impossible franchise.
Fortunately for Tom Cruise, there won’t be any Barbenheimer double features this time around to overshadow his brilliance. Instead, we can anticipate being amazed by his underwater diving feats or his almost reckless determination in clinging onto a biplane mid-flight. So mark your calendars for May 23, as that’s when the show will begin.
