Maximilian Dood on Marvel Tokon: Gorgeous, fun, but “not really a tag game”

At the EVO 2025 event, Maximilian Dood complimented Marvel Tokon’s fighting style but voiced doubts about its team play mechanics, likening it to an intense one-versus-one encounter that is particularly spicy.

Content creator Maximilian Dood recently gave his initial thoughts on Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, following a playthrough at the EVO 2025 event.

Referring to a comment made on a Sajam live broadcast, he likened the upcoming 4-player fighter to an intense one-on-one battle, technically labeled as a team game but essentially favoring solo play. At EVO 2025, the world got its first glimpse of the unreleased Marvel fighting game designed for four players.

Marvel Tokon “a 1v1 game with features” says Maximilian Dood

In simple terms, the emergence of a fresh tag team game within Marvel Tokon generated significant excitement among the Fighting Game Community (FGC), largely because of the previous triumphs of the Marvel vs Capcom series.

As Maximilian Dood, I was absolutely buzzing when the initial trailer unveiled back in early June. But, after diving into the game myself, I’ve started to voice some early concerns about the tagging system – a key feature for the Fighting Game Community (FGC).

As a devoted fan, I can relate when Maximilian Dood expresses that this game isn’t your typical ‘tag’ affair, as he put it. The label “4v4” is plastered everywhere, but in a constructive critique, I’d say it feels more like a one-on-one battle with added elements.

In Sajam’s conversation, someone referred to it as a thrilling one-on-one match with a spicy twist, and I absolutely adore it. A fitting description for it would be…

Initially, I find myself controlling two characters, yet it predominantly feels like managing one character with an assist. There’s a lot of potential strategies, but upon first play, it seems the game is designed or feels more suitable for a 1 vs 1 experience.

Maximilian Dood contended that Tokon’s tag system seems to be missing compelling reasons for players to use it. Since the game provides minimal gray health restoration, there isn’t much advantage in switching characters during a match because you directly lose health instead.

Maximilian Dood stated, “There might be rewards in terms of points and resources, such as your health, that could motivate tagging more effectively. The question is whether one chooses to use this feature positively or not.

“I kind of wish it would dedicate to being a 1v1”

Essentially, although the popular streamer expressed his anticipation for the Marvel Tokon launch, he suggested that they should decide on whether it would be a 1 vs 1 game or a 4 vs 4 game, rather than attempting to combine both options, which might be likened to wanting “to have one’s cake and eat it too.

Maximilian Dood expressed his desire for the game we played to focus solely on one-on-one matches, with an intense Guilty Gear Xrd or BlazBlue style. He added that it would be cool if this was strictly a one-versus-one format, but currently, the game functions as a unique hybrid tag game.

Single character focus part of design says ArcSystem Works

It’s worth noting that during the Marvel Tokon EVO 2025 panel, Arc System Works discussed the design of the game, mentioning that it was intended to allow players to concentrate on a single main character initially for an enhanced gaming experience.

Kazuto Sekine, Game Director of Arc System Works, mentioned that one of the significant hurdles they face is making it difficult for a tag fighter player to handle multiple characters. To address this issue, they aimed to create a tag fighting game where mastering just one character would still provide an enjoyable gaming experience.

Is it possible to participate in the ongoing closed beta testing for Marvel Tokon, which hasn’t been officially released yet?
