Max George credits mum Barbara for ‘saving his life’ after his hands ‘turned blue’ and he struggled to breathe before getting his pacemaker fitted
Max George acknowledged that it was his mother who swiftly intervened during a critical moment when he exhibited initial signs of a heart problem, thereby effectively rescuing him.
In December, the lead singer of The Wanted was urgently taken to the hospital. Doctors inserted a pacemaker into his chest following his illness, which occurred during his stay at his mother Barbara’s residence in Manchester.
Currently recuperating at his shared home in Essex with his actress girlfriend Maisie Smith, Max (age 36) expresses gratitude for her quick decision-making that potentially saved his life.
He shared with The Sun: “I wasn’t quite myself for several days, I began feeling unwell. I couldn’t pinpoint the issue exactly. I felt quite sluggish and had trouble getting up. However, I didn’t consider it to be something serious.
Fortunately, I had visited my mother’s house for the night, and upon waking up, I found myself in a chilling state. My hands were a shade of blue, and my arms appeared grey. It took great effort just to raise myself from the bed.
In an instant, health care professional Barbara, aged 63, understood that her son was severely unwell and swiftly contacted a doctor acquaintance, who strongly advised Max to seek medical attention at the closest hospital immediately.
He remembered feeling utterly unable to move his arms, and the most distressing sensation was a tightening in his throat as if someone were choking him. It was as if someone had their fingers tightly clasped around his neck.
‘Thank God I stayed at Mum’s house – she saved my life.’
Max, who drafted his will during his hospital stay, expressed that hearing about the need for a pacemaker prompted him to ponder over his “duties” and the people he would be departing, if unfortunate enough to pass away.
Referring back to his frightening and restless initial night at the hospital, the singer admits he found it difficult to move.
After penning my will just two days prior, I found myself plunged back into a whirlwind of anxiety. The next day, my heart raced erratically and my blood pressure dipped dangerously low, sending me rushing to the hospital. On this particularly harrowing day, I could only describe it as the absolute worst – a stark reminder of the fragility of life.
He mentioned that night was extremely intense, as if his throat was constricting and panic set in intensely. He expressed a feeling of impending doom, describing it as one of the most dreadful experiences he’s ever had, evoking strong emotions within him.
Thankfully, Max received his pacemaker just a week into his hospital stay. During the procedure, he remained aware albeit deeply sedated, as the singer underwent the operation.
Additionally, he recalled the somber view of the surgeon’s hand stained with blood as he withdrew his hands, yet he felt a surge of exhilaration knowing that he was now on the road to recovery.
Following his recovery from surgery, Maisie was the first one to welcome him, and Max expressed that it was then when he felt like a genuine individual once more.
By that point, I too was experiencing a regular heartbeat, and my heart rate escalated rapidly. This caused me to feel a tingling sensation in my feet, which I believe is due to the fact that the blood began to circulate more effectively.
‘I was like, “Holy s, I feel alive again,” like it was a really nice feeling.’
Toward the end of the year, Max shared a contemplative message on Instagram saying, “2024 was definitely a year I won’t easily forget!
I’m incredibly grateful for the life I lead, eagerly anticipating the next phase, regardless of the hurdles that may surface.
