Maurice DuBois will exit ‘CBS Evening News’ to make way for a new anchor

Maurice DuBois is following his co-anchor John Dickerson out the door of “CBS Evening News.”

DuBois announced his departure from the network Thursday in an Instagram post.

In a recent post, DuBois announced that December 18th will be their final day broadcasting with CBS News, calling it “the Honor of a Lifetime.”

Dickerson revealed in October that he was leaving the show. The current co-anchors took over in January, replacing Norah O’Donnell.

CBS News plans to name new anchors in January. This will be the first significant personnel choice made by Bari Weiss since becoming editor in chief.

DuBois and Dickerson participated in an attempt to add in-depth, investigative reports – similar to those on ’60 Minutes’ – to the evening news. However, this approach didn’t quite work, as viewers generally expect evening news programs to provide a quick summary of the day’s headlines.

The broadcast isn’t performing well in the ratings. “CBS Evening News” remains behind both “ABC World News Tonight with David Muir” and “NBC Nightly News with Tom Llamas.”

Bill Owens, a former executive producer for “60 Minutes,” created the idea. He departed the show in August following public debate about a 2024 interview he conducted with Kamala Harris, the former Vice President.

President Trump filed a lawsuit against the network, claiming they unfairly edited an interview to benefit his opponent’s campaign. While legal experts considered the lawsuit baseless, Paramount Global chose to settle for $16 million, primarily to ensure approval of its planned merger with Skydance Media.

Before becoming an anchor for “CBS Evening News,” 59-year-old DuBois spent 20 years as a local news anchor at WCBS in New York City. He had previously been a prominent figure at the city’s NBC station as well.
