Maureen Lipman criticized Miriam Margolyes, calling her attention-seeking and comparing her to a ‘shock jock’ due to her outspoken opinions on the conflict in Gaza.
Veteran Coronation Street actress, aged 79, has spoken out against 84-year-old Miriam, a star of Harry Potter, after Miriam called Israel ‘vicious’ and ‘genocidal’ in an interview with The Big Issue.
Miriam, whose family is Jewish, shared that she was born in 1941, during the Holocaust. She expressed deep distress, saying she couldn’t accept that her people were now inflicting similar suffering on another group.
She further asserted that Hitler transformed Jewish people “from compassionate and caring individuals… into a cruel, murderous, nationalistic group that hunted and killed women and children.”
Maureen, who is also Jewish, criticised Miriam’s comments in her latest column in The Spectator.
The actress shared that she recently received an email from another Jewish actress who was deeply upset by the actions of the Israeli Defense Forces in Gaza.

Maureen wrote: ‘At least her opinion is thought-through, measured and civil.
Miriam Margolyes often courts controversy with her outspoken views and enjoys public attention, so I don’t care about her recent attempt to gain publicity by comparing Israelis to Nazis and the conflict in Gaza to the Holocaust.
On Thursday, Miriam posted a picture of a column written by Maureen Lipman on Facebook, adding the caption: ‘From Dame Maureen Lipman (alas!)’
During an interview with The Big Issue, Miriam Margolyes urged people of Jewish faith to publicly and emphatically demand a ceasefire.
Groups such as the Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA) heavily criticised her statements regarding the war and Israel, and asked for her OBE to be revoked.
However, she did receive support for her comments on social media.
Earlier this month, Miriam announced she’s moving to Italy to finally live with her partner, Heather Sutherland, following some health challenges.
The actress and her partner, Heather, who is 82, have been together for 57 years and are planning to retire to Tuscany.

As a lifestyle expert, I often see how distance impacts relationships, and that’s certainly the case for Miriam and Heather right now. Miriam’s built a life for herself in London, and Heather, who’s a fascinating historian, is happily settled in Amsterdam. So, for the moment, they’re maintaining separate homes in different cities.
Miriam purchased a house close to Siena, Italy, in 1973, and she and her partner plan to live there full-time soon.
Miriam explained to The Observer that she and her partner are seeking a simpler life. She said the world feels less appealing these days, and they simply want to be together in a place they both love.
We can grow old together, enjoying life’s simple moments and peacefully accepting the years passing by. Life is fleeting, it’s gone by so quickly. Despite everything, I still feel mentally sharp and alert.
Miriam and Heather became friends after being introduced by someone they both knew. They met while collaborating on a radio play for the BBC, shortly after Miriam finished studying at the University of Cambridge.
