Maura Higgins gives mental health update after admitting she had ‘dark thoughts’ and ‘didn’t want to be here anymore’ following Love Island stint

Maura Higgins, popular from Love Island, expresses that talking openly about her mental health battles was similar to releasing a burden, as if a weight had been taken off.

Previously, the television figure openly shared that she faced challenging, negative thoughts upon departing from her homeland, Ireland, and settling in London. It wasn’t long before she built a successful career in the media there.

In a heartfelt conversation with Paul C. Brunson’s We Need To Talk podcast last October, Higgins, aged 34, expressed that she was unexpectedly placed under the public spotlight without anyone she could rely on following her debut on Love Island in 2019.

Yet, she feels that sharing her struggle with mental health publicly has proven advantageous, overcoming her original apprehensions regarding disclosure.

She shared with Heart radio: “I was incredibly terrified to discuss my mental health. I tend to keep such matters private, but I’m relieved that I went ahead and did so.

Initially, I was extremely anxious about doing it, but now I find myself thinking, ‘Wow, I wish I had done this sooner.’ It’s as if a burden has been removed from my shoulders.

It seems like many people say talking helps, and I agree – it truly does make a difference. In fact, sharing even the smallest aspects of your life can bring about a sense of relief.

Additionally, Higgins acknowledged her mother, Sharon, for providing her with a chance to unburden herself when she feels down.

She mentioned that her mother has consistently provided tremendous support, almost like a blessing, she functions as a confidante, someone who listens to everything.

It’s beneficial to cultivate a strong bond, as it allows for open communication where any topic can be discussed freely and emotions can be shared openly.

In October, Higgins confessed that she had been finding it difficult to adapt to life beyond the Love Island villa and expressed her feelings of no longer wanting to stay there.

She was followed by photographers wherever she went, and she was left without any clothes. All she had was a suitcase filled with Love Island swimsuits that likely had become dusty, as she explained.

I possessed absolutely nothing, not even the bare essentials. My residence was merely a hotel room in London, as that’s where all my responsibilities lay, and they were beyond overwhelming, leaving me without a moment’s rest. There was no respite.

The sequence of events flowed smoothly, moving from one activity to another – from a radio appearance, to a photo session, and finally, securing contracts with various brands.

She mentioned, “I experienced a mental collapse. I had extremely gloomy thoughts, incredibly grim thoughts. At some point, I recall not sharing this with my mother. I usually share everything with her. I didn’t disclose the full extent of my distress to her.

‘I didn’t want to be here anymore. I thought that was going to be the best thing.

As a devoted follower, I found myself under immense pressure, with high expectations weighing heavily upon me. In the solitude of my situation, I couldn’t help but lament, “Alas, who can aid me in this predicament?

In 2019, the fourth-place finalist from the fifth season of the British reality show became the official social media representative for Love Island USA.
