I’m thrilled to hear Sam Witwer is returning as the voice of Darth Maul! He absolutely nailed the character in both Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, and even brought that same energy to Maul’s brief but memorable live-action appearance in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Of course, many of us first met Maul back in The Phantom Menace, where Ray Park physically portrayed him, but Peter Seranfinowicz originally provided the voice. It’s fantastic to see Witwer continuing the legacy.
Gideon Adlon, known for her roles in movies like Blockers and The Craft: Legacy, will be the voice of Devon Izara, a young Twi’lek padawan who becomes Darth Maul’s new apprentice. Wagner Moura, an Academy Award nominee for his work in The Secret Agent, will voice Captain Brander Lawson, a well-respected police officer on the planet Janix. Richard Ayoade will voice 2B0T, also known as “Two-Boots,” Lawson’s droid partner. Ayoade previously provided the voice for Q9-0 in The Mandalorian.
Vanessa Marshall returns as Rook Kast, a Mandalorian who fought alongside Maul during the Clone Wars. She previously voiced Hera Syndulla in Rebels. A.J. LoCascio, known as the voice of Gambit in X-Men ’97, will play Marrok, a Sith Inquisitor who hunts Jedi and appeared in Ahsoka. The trailer for Maul: Shadow Lord also included the Eleventh Brother, another Sith Inquisitor from Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi, but it’s unclear if Clancy Brown will return to voice him.
Dennis Haysbert, known for his roles in 24 and Send Help, will voice the character Master Eeko-Dio-Daki. Chris Diamantopoulos (Silicon Valley) will play Looti Vario, and Charlie Bushnell (Percy Jackson and the Olympians) will voice Rylee Lawson. David W. Collins, a veteran sound designer from Star Wars, will voice Spybot. Steve Blum, famous for voicing Wolverine in many Marvel animations, will play Icarus. He previously voiced Garazeb “Zeb” Orrelios in Star Wars Rebels.
Story
Lucasfilm’s official logline for Maul — Shadow Lord says:
In this action-packed story, Maul is trying to restore his criminal organization on a remote planet the Empire hasn’t reached. He meets a discouraged young Jedi student who might be the perfect helper in his ongoing quest for revenge.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I’m really excited about the setting for the new Maul: Shadow Lord series! Most of the action will unfold on Janix, a planet created specifically for this story. It’s described as being on the edge of the established galaxy – not quite in the wild Outer Rim, but outside the heavily controlled core worlds. What’s fascinating is that Janix is self-governed and has a functioning democracy, but it’s also riddled with crime. Basically, it’s a fragile peace maintained by the gangs themselves, as everyone benefits from the status quo. It sounds like Maul is going to throw a wrench into all of that, building his own criminal empire – and we know where this leads! This series will show how his organization eventually becomes Crimson Dawn, the group we first saw in Solo: A Star Wars Story, and which has been fleshed out in comics like Crimson Reign and the upcoming Star Wars: Outlaws game. It’s a really clever way to connect everything and show the origins of a major Star Wars underworld power.

The comic series Maul – Shadow Lord takes place immediately after the end of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and runs at the same time as The Bad Batch, during the Empire’s early years. The story is set roughly 19 years before the original Star Wars movie, and about nine years before Maul’s appearance in Solo: A Star Wars Story, which occurred 10 years before the Battle of Yavin.
