Now that the show is out and fans are loving it, it’s poised to address the unresolved issues from Solo: A Star Wars Story. By showing Maul rebuilding his criminal organization after the Republic fell, Shadow Lord appears to be providing the answers viewers have been waiting for regarding the events in Solo.

Solo told the story of how Han Solo became the iconic character fans know and love. The film featured Alden Ehrenreich as the younger Han Solo, taking over the role from Harrison Ford, and Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, succeeding Billy Dee Williams. Despite these casting choices, the movie struggled from the start and had a disappointing debut in theaters, which meant a major cliffhanger involving Darth Maul was never resolved in a sequel.

What Went Wrong with Solo: A Star Wars Story?

It’s possible the reason for the Solo movie’s lukewarm reception is that fans were already satisfied with Han Solo’s story. Star Wars fans love to delve into every detail of the universe and its characters – Darth Maul is a prime example – but Han Solo’s journey, especially in the original trilogy and even The Force Awakens, felt complete to many. The Solo film complicated a story that fans largely considered perfect.

Like many Star Wars films, Solo faced strong opposition from a vocal group of fans. However, the bigger issue was a general lack of interest in the movie. While a few scenes are occasionally highlighted as enjoyable, the film was mostly met with indifference. This lack of enthusiasm directly contributed to its poor performance at the box office.

People’s reactions to The Last Jedi also play a role in understanding the situation. Some believe interest in Star Wars dipped after the negative response to Solo, which was released shortly after the divisive The Last Jedi. What Were the Original Plans For Maul in Solo: A Star Wars Story?

It’s still not entirely clear what George Lucas originally intended for Darth Maul, but it’s obvious Lucasfilm hoped he’d return in live-action. Lucas initially planned for Maul to be the main villain of the sequel trilogy, with an apprentice by his side. It seems Lucasfilm considered adapting that idea for future stories.

There’s also a theory that Maul might have been planned for several unmade Star Wars projects following the release of Solo. A Boba Fett movie was discussed for a long time, with directors James Mangold and Josh Trank both considered at different points. Additionally, another project was in the works around the same time, but ultimately, neither film ever got made.

Darth Maul and the Crimson Dawn organization had the potential to star in a series of gritty, underworld-focused films. This would have allowed Maul to operate in the shadows, facing off against dangerous bounty hunters and formidable foes in a rarely explored corner of the Star Wars universe. However, after Solo didn’t perform well and fan interest in those characters waned, Maul’s opportunity for a major on-screen comeback seemed lost – until the Maul – Shadow Lord project emerged.

Maul – Shadow Lord Can Fix Solo: A Star Wars Story

As a fan, I’m really excited about how they can make Maul’s story connect to the events of Solo. It all comes down to the timeline, especially considering what happened to him on Mandalore with Ahsoka. He’s clearly trying to rebuild his criminal organization. There’s about 19 or 20 years between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, and Solo happens roughly 10 years after Revenge of the Sith. That leaves a big chunk of time for the Maul – Shadow Lord series to explore what he was up to!

The show has the potential to explore Maul’s journey extensively, from his initial state at the beginning of the series to his eventual rise as a powerful figure in the criminal underworld, as seen in Solo. It could easily depict Maul taking control, replacing the old underworld structures, and ultimately leading to the conclusion hinted at in Solo.

Ten years is a significant amount of time to cover in a story, so it would be helpful to jump forward in time within the Maul – Shadow Lord narrative. Even a gap of just a year or two between seasons would make it more likely to see Maul and Qira together, as well as Dryden Voss. The story could even include an appearance by Han Solo, which would connect it to and enhance the impact of a previous Star Wars film.
