Matthew Perry's family 'thrilled' about accountability coming from death investigation

As a movie enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the captivating world of “Friends,” I can’t help but feel a profound sense of loss for Matthew Perry, a talented actor whose struggles with addiction were as much a part of his story as his iconic character Chandler Bing.

Matthew Perry’s loved ones honored the one-year anniversary of the “Friends” actor’s passing by promoting his addiction foundation and expressing their thoughts on the ongoing examination of his cause of death, as reported on Monday.

On NBC’s “Today” show, Perry’s mother Suzanne Morrison, his stepfather and journalist Keith Morrison (who also works for “Dateline”), along with the actor’s three sisters shared that throughout Perry’s life, he dedicated himself to aiding others and motivating them to express when they require assistance.

Sister Caitlin Morrison, the executive director of the Matthew Perry Foundation of Canada, stated, ‘He aimed to demonstrate his actions were courageous,'” or more casually, “‘According to Sister Caitlin Morrison, head of the Matthew Perry Foundation of Canada, he was trying to show everyone it took courage.’

Earlier this month, the family revealed their Canadian division of the foundation, aiming to tackle addiction’s effects through research funding and post-rehabilitation support for individuals struggling with substance abuse issues. Born in the U.S., Perry grew up in Canada before relocating to L.A. at 15 years old to live with his father, John Perry.

Previously, the U.S.-based Matthew Perry Foundation was established mere days following the actor’s unfortunate death discovered in his Pacific Palisades home hot tub. Trace quantities of ketamine were reportedly found within his system by the Los Angeles County medical examiner.

In August, a personal assistant living with Perry, two physicians, a woman known as the “Ketamine Queen” (allegedly a drug dealer), and another individual were indicted for supplying ketamine that eventually caused the actor’s demise. U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada stated that these defendants exploited Mr. Perry’s addiction to amass wealth. The actor was undergoing ketamine treatments for depression and anxiety, but he was also self-administering the drug without supervision and had developed an addiction, as claimed by prosecutors.

His mother said she is “thrilled” that there’s been some accountability in his death.

His stepfather expressed, “It’s our expectation, and I believe the relevant authorities share this sentiment, that anyone who profits from selling deadly substances has been made aware of the consequences. Regardless of your professional background, you will face penalties.

During his decade-long stint on “Friends” in the ’90s on NBC, the Emmy-winning actor’s battles with addiction were evident to many. In 2022, he shared more about his addiction journey in his memoir titled “Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing”. At the end of his life, Keith Morrison observed that the actor seemed to be sober. Though it was known that Perry had undergone treatment for addiction, it wasn’t widely known that he eventually lost control over it.

Sister Madeline Morrison said she wasn’t sure if even Perry had realized that he relapsed.

On Monday, Suzanne Morrison acknowledged the constraints she faced in assisting her son with his struggles against addiction.

She expressed gratitude for her good fortune, but admitted a difficulty she couldn’t overcome. There was one challenge she couldn’t help him with. She urged, with tearful eyes, “Please, don’t self-blame as it causes pain.

Keith Morrison stated, ‘Money cannot heal an addiction.’ Instead, it requires something more. That’s our aim with the foundation.
