Matthew McConaughey’s mom is kind of talkative, so he kept the deets from her for years

For many years, Matthew McConaughey avoided sharing important details with his mother, Kay, during their regular phone conversations-he’d lost trust in her because she often shared his personal news with others.

“For about eight years, I had to keep my conversations with her brief during our Sunday phone calls because she tended to share a lot of personal details,” Matthew explained to People in an interview with his mother. “I might tell her something as a son talking to his mom on Sunday, and then I’d see it reported in the news or read it in the paper by Tuesday.”

Kay described the break in their relationship as a hiatus, and it began after she showed the media around Matthew’s childhood home without getting his permission. She explained that she didn’t believe he would ever discover what she had done.

“I was so proud that I was just telling the world,” she said.

Matthew McConaughey recently suggested he and Woody Harrelson might actually be brothers. This came after discovering their mothers knew each other, leading to speculation about a possible family connection.

The break was over once Matthew felt comfortable with his level of celebrity. After they started appearing together on red carpets again, Kay would jokingly ask if there were any guidelines she needed to adhere to, but he always encouraged her to share her most outrageous stories without holding back.

“My mom is free to say whatever she pleases,” Matthew stated. “Let’s stop holding back and just do it, Mom.”

Matthew and Kay are both featured in the new movie “The Lost Bus,” and she portrays his mother. The film, debuting Friday on Apple TV+, also includes Matthew’s son, Levi, in a starring role.

Do you hear that hopeful sound? That could be Levi wishing his dad picked up some wisdom from Grandma.
