As a huge fan of Matthew McConaughey, I’m always intrigued by his multifaceted persona both on and off the screen. His recent teasing about running for political office has only added to my fascination with him.
At a gathering of governors in Salt Lake City last Friday, actor Matthew McConaughey playfully hinted at his potential entry into politics. He shared stories of socializing over his own tequila brand with some governors the previous night and sought guidance from another on staying true to himself if he ever decides to pursue a political career.
I’ve always wondered if Matthew McConaughey, the actor famous for “Dazed and Confused,” “A Time to Kill,” and “True Detective,” would lean more towards Democratic or Republican politics, and which position he might aim for. However, during the National Governors Association meeting, he kept his political stance a secret and didn’t give any hints.
“For the past six years or so, I’ve been on a journey of learning and self-discovery. Governor Murphy, when you asked about my intentions, I wondered if I possess the right instincts and intelligence for the role, and if it’s a good match for both parties. In other words, would I be able to contribute effectively?”
He was learning a lot at the governors’ annual summer meeting, he told Murphy.
As a movie buff, I joked with Murphy last night, “Boy, I picked up quite a few things from you after we shared some of that McConaughey tequila!” He was the one who suggested trying it out together.
McConaughey joined a conversation between Utah Governor Spencer Cox (a Republican) and Colorado Governor Jared Polis (a Democrat) on fostering respectful discourse in politics.
Cox, the friendly governor of Utah with a reputation for polite behavior, has initiated a “Improve Disagreements” campaign in government to replace harsh language and confrontational tactics with respectful dialogue. This effort has piqued McConaughey’s interest as he too has advocated for more reverence among US leaders.
I’ve seen it firsthand in both politics and Hollywood: the pressure to capture attention at all costs. As a former politician myself, I can attest to the intense competition for public favor and media coverage. In today’s digital age, clicks equal currency, and extreme rhetoric is all too often the coin of the realm.
As a film enthusiast, I understand that our industry needs to be mindful of the words we use right from the start. We should initiate conversations with open-minded statements instead of alienating moderates or conservatives. Regrettably, we’ve made this mistake to some extent in the past.
In a statement made in 2022, McConaughey expressed his potential interest in running for governor in his native state of Texas. Simultaneously, he has been vocal about gun control, advocating for stronger background checks for firearm purchases and increasing the minimum age requirement to buy an AR-15-style rifle from 18 to 21, following the devastating school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.
Hawaii Gov. Josh Green, a Democrat, encouraged McConaughey to someday run and offered advice.
“Green cautioned against limiting yourself to one identity,” he warned. “Many Republicans and Democrats may try to pigeonhole you, but remain true to who you are – your uniqueness could bring value to us all.”
