Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson Could Return for True Detective Season 2
In simpler terms, the creator of True Detective, Nic Pizzolatto, has shared that Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are willing to revisit their characters from the show, and he already has a new story planned for them. The original HBO series, which first aired in 2014, focused on detectives Rustin “Rust” Cohle (played by McConaughey) and Martin “Marty” Hart (Harrelson), as they worked together to solve the murder of Dora Lange (Amanda Rose Batz). To this day, many fans consider season 1 to be the best that True Detective has to offer.
During an appearance on the “Nothing Left Unsaid” podcast (as reported by The Hollywood Reporter), Pizzolatto mentioned, “I’ve got another story brewing for Cohle and Hart, who knows, we might tackle it someday.” He disclosed that he has had discussions with McConaughey and Harrelson about this potential project, and both actors have expressed interest. It is important to note that the story has not been written yet, nor has it received official approval. However, it is a possibility that has been discussed between Pizzolatto and the original stars of the show. Read on for more of his insights below:
The idea isn’t one I’ve put into words yet, but it’s been on my mind. We’ve discussed rekindling our relationship and moving forward with it. From what I can tell, the guys seem open to it, though the question remains whether this could ever become a reality or not.
What This Means For True Detective
Cohle & Hart’s Next Story Doesn’t Align With The Show’s Current Direction
The fifth season of the series “True Detective” is being developed, and it’s anticipated that production will commence this year, with a planned release in 2027. As an anthology show, each season features distinct characters and locations, and the forthcoming season will be based in Jamaica Bay, New York after the previous one was set in Ennis, Alaska. After the expiration of Nic Pizzolatto’s contract with the show following season 3, he chose not to renew it, leading to a new creative direction that he subsequently criticized openly upon the release of season 4.
Under these conditions, it seems unlikely that Pizzolatto’s Cohle and Hart story will materialize as True Detective season 5. Moreover, it might be difficult for him to return to the series in a future season. Critics have praised True Detective season 4 as the show’s finest since its debut, marking a positive shift after mixed reactions to seasons 2 and 3. HBO is planning to capitalize on season 4’s success and maintain its anthology structure without Pizzolatto’s involvement.
Our Take On Nic Pizzolatto’s Comments
Another Cohle & Hart Story Is Exciting, But Probably Won’t Happen
It seems unlikely that True Detective, starring McConaughey and Harrelson as Cohle and Hart, will return anytime soon due to a few factors. HBO might not be keen on collaborating with Pizzolatto again following his remarks about season 4, and without a current agreement in place, there’s no compulsion for them to revive this collaboration. Moreover, continuing their stories could potentially tarnish the esteemed legacy of the first season.
