Matthew Lillard says he would “love” to reprise his role as Stu in Scream 7
As a die-hard Scream fan with over two decades of obsession under my belt, hearing Matthew Lillard express his enthusiasm for reprising his role as Stu Macher in Scream 7 has me more excited than Sidney Prescott on a quiet night in Woodsboro. The prospect of seeing our favorite serial killer return to the screen after all these years is like finding a long-lost Ghostface mask in my attic – it’s both terrifying and exhilarating at the same time!
As a die-hard Scream fan, could it be that we might witness a reunion soon? Intriguingly, Matthew Lillard, known for playing Stu in the series, recently graced an episode of The Drew Barrymore Show. During his visit, he spilled some tantalizing details about Scream 7! When asked if he’d be interested in returning to his role, Scream enthusiasts like me will be thrilled to know that he seemed open to the idea.
Hey there! Let me take you back to 1996, remember when I was Stu Macher in “Scream”? That was the beginning of the terrifying “Scream” franchise. As the story unfolds, it’s revealed that my character, Stu, is none other than Ghostface. But here’s a twist – there are actually two Ghostface killers! Yep, I was one of them, with Billy Loomis (played by Skeet Ulrich) being the other. Interestingly, he was the mastermind behind all those chilling murders in Woodsboro.
At the end of the horror movie, it seems like Stu has met his demise after being repeatedly stabbed and a TV set falling on him, causing electrocution. But during an interview on Drew Barrymore’s talk show (where she played Casey Becker in the film), Lillard expresses his belief that Stu is most likely still alive.
Although it seemed like Stuart was near death after the TV set landed on him, I wouldn’t be shocked if he pulled through. It’s not unheard of for villains to be thought dead in horror films, only to make an unexpected comeback with a vengeance. Since they didn’t carry Stuart out in a body bag, there could still be hope.
Could we expect Lillard to return for the eagerly awaited seventh movie, should he be offered the chance? Here’s what he specifically said about it.
I would love it. If it made sense for the franchise. If Kevin [Williamson] liked it. Then sure. Obviously.
Screenwriter of the iconic “Scream” (1996) movie, Kevin Williamson, is planning to take on directorial duties for “Scream 7”, scheduled for a theater release on February 27, 2026. As of now, only Neve Campbell has been confirmed to star in the film, returning as Sidney Prescott in her role.
