Matthew Lillard will be returning as Stu Macher in the next Scream movie, almost 30 years after first playing the character. Scream 7 is scheduled for release in February 2026, and Lillard is currently discussing his anticipated return to the franchise.
Honestly, when I heard Matthew Lillard was coming back as Stu in the new Scream movie, I was totally thrilled! It’s crazy considering his character definitely died in the first one. He was asked about his reaction, and he just started playfully riffing, like, ‘Whoa, whoa, hold on! What’s your take on that?’ and then he started acting like he was being attacked – it was hilarious! He was clearly getting into character and referencing a famous scene from the original, which was awesome to see.
Lillard joked, “Go grab your TV and throw it on my head, and I’ll live.”
Putting the jokes aside, Lillard shared that he’s a little anxious about how fans will react to his return as Stu in Scream 7. He’s worried people might question why his character is back, find it unbelievable, or dislike his acting.
When asked whether he was referring to the outcomes or the performance itself, Lillard explained he meant the performance, though both were connected. He described trusting the director and giving his best effort when following a script and putting on a show.
Once you’ve done what you can, you just have to wait and see what happens, and be ready to deal with the outcome,” Lillard explained.
Lillard is Nervous About His Comeback
It’s still unknown how Stu will be brought back in Scream 7, but Matthew Lillard, the actor who played him, was worried about returning to the role. He explained that he felt pressure because he didn’t want to disappoint fans or negatively impact how they remember Stu, especially if his performance wasn’t up to par.
Filming for Scream 7 finished in March 2024, and it will bring back Neve Campbell as Sydney Prescott and Courtney Cox as Gale Weathers. Ethan Embry, Joel McHale, Mason Gooding, Scott Foley, and David Arquette are also starring in the movie.
The first Scream film, directed by Wes Craven and written by Kevin Williamson, came out in 1996 and quickly became a popular horror series. Now, Williamson returns as a co-writer and director for the seventh Scream movie, which he wrote with Guy Busick and James Vanderbilt.
Scream 7 will be released in theaters on Feb. 27, 2026.
