Matthew Gray Gubler’s Einstein TV Series Gets Greenlit by CBS!

Matthew Gray Gubler, who charmed viewers for more than a decade with his portrayal of a brilliant FBI forensic analyst on “Criminal Minds,” is now set to employ the abilities he developed during that span. He will assume the leading role in a fresh CBS drama titled “Einstein.

According to recent reports, Gubler will portray Albert Einstein’s great-grandson in an upcoming series. Previously unconfirmed, it has now been officially announced that the show has been greenlit by CBS. The plotline goes as follows: “A genius but aimless individual, who is none other than Albert Einstein’s great-grandson, spends his days comfortably teaching at a university until his rebellious behavior gets him into legal trouble. To escape punishment, he is compelled to assist a local detective in solving her most perplexing cases.

Matthew Gray Gubler appeared on “Criminal Minds” for an impressive 15 seasons. His character, Dr. Spencer Reid, held prominent roles as a Supervisory Special Agent in the Behavioral Analysis Unit. Known for his extraordinary intelligence, with an IQ surpassing 180 and photographic memory, Reid boasts doctorates in mathematics, chemistry, and engineering. Reid’s exceptional analytical skills were crucial to the series, and Gubler’s portrayal of him significantly contributed to his widespread appeal. Intriguingly, Gubler was one of only two original cast members to remain with the show throughout its 15-season run, A.J. Cook being the other.

When it was revealed that the revival/sequel series was coming out, and that Gubler would not be returning to his role in it, fans were taken aback. Both Gubler and showrunner Erica Messer stated their desire to make it work, but scheduling issues prevented them from doing so. However, during Season 3, schedules miraculously synced up, allowing Gubler to briefly rejoin the franchise.

The popular procedural comedy series “Einstein” hails from the creative minds of Andy Breckman and Randy Zisk, who are also known for their work. This show, modeled after a German counterpart, gained popularity during testing phases. Its unique blend of serious police procedural scenes interspersed with humor, coupled with a well-known CBS star as the main character, has generated significant interest within CBS circles.

Among the two new shows given the go-ahead by the network, the other one is a comedy, while DMV focuses on everyone’s least favorite destination – the Department of Motor Vehicles. The show’s main characters will be an eclectic group who find humor in the mundane tasks associated with working at the DMV. It is set to take over the timeslot previously occupied by a series starring Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr., which unfortunately lasted just one season.

Einstein will premiere on CBS during the 2025-26 TV season.
