Matthew Goode Stars in Gripping New Netflix Thriller from The Queen’s Gambit Creator!
Actor Matthew Goode, known for his roles in Watchmen, is set to debut in a new television series. Following his appearance in Paramount+’s The Offer, Goode will headline the forthcoming British suspense series titled Dept. Q.
Department Q, a newly created cold-case division, is set to premiere its first trailer before the series airs on May 29th. This unit houses DCI Carl Morck (Goode), a once highly-rated detective who has become difficult to work with due to a past traumatic event. He’s been relegated to this department as its sole member.
In simple terms, the official tagline for Dept. Q states that the former star detective Carl Morck takes on a long-unsolved case while transforming a small office in Edinburgh into a highly efficient team of offbeat police officers, who specialize in resolving seemingly impossible cases. This series is inspired by the book series of the same name written by Danish author Jussi Adler-Olsen, which encompasses 10 novels.
The writer/director found the source material particularly intriguing. Specifically, the title “Department Q” and its concept left a lasting impression on him. During his shooting of “A Walk Among the Tombstones” in New York, he had the opportunity to meet with the author, and by that time, he had owned the books for a couple of years already.
In this upcoming crime series, we have Matthew Goode from Downton Abbey and Stoker, Chloe Pirrie known for The Game and An Inspector Calls, Jamie Sives of Annika and Guilt, Mark Bonnar who appeared in Operation Mincemeat and Unforgotten, Alexej Manvelov recognized for Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan and Chernobyl, Leah Byrne famous for Nightsleeper and The Last Bus, Kate Dickie known as The Witch and Game of Thrones actress, Shirley Henderson who worked on Bridget Jones’s Diary and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Kelly Macdonald from No Country for Old Men and Gosford Park, and lastly Tom Bulpett, seen in Father Brown and Casualty.
Department Q hails from the pen and direction of Scott Frank, who was also responsible for a previous Netflix production that premiered on the streaming service in 2020. The period drama starring Anya Taylor-Joy has remained popular on Netflix’s list of most-watched TV shows for five years now, with an impressive total of 112.8 million viewing hours since its debut.
Dept. Q’s Lead Character Couldn’t Be Anyone Else But Matthew Goode
In the process of choosing actors for the upcoming series, Frank had a clear choice: Matthew Goode. As the creator shared, they have been working together since 2006. They first collaborated on the crime film “The Lookout,” which was also Frank’s directorial debut. “Matthew seemed like the perfect fit for this role,” Frank said. “I wrote with him in mind, knowing he could bring both intelligence and a rough edge to the character. But what I appreciated most is that he can express deep emotions without being overly sentimental.
Goode expressed gratitude for the opportunity to demonstrate his acting abilities in the forthcoming crime series, noting that he feels fortunate to have been given roles that others might not have considered him suitable for. Previously, in “The Lookout,” he portrayed a Kansas bank robber involved in criminal activities, which may seem an unusual fit. Similarly, in this new role, he admits that he might not have initially seen himself as the ideal choice to play such a part.
Dept. Q premieres on Netflix on May 29.
