In an interview with Radio Times, it was revealed that Goode won’t appear in the third movie due to a packed schedule filming his latest Netflix crime show Department Q and a recent knee surgery he underwent.
He mentioned that he couldn’t participate in the second event as he was engaged with “The Offer” at that time. For the third one, he was busy filming “Department Q”. However, he injured his knee and needed surgery which would take several weeks to recover from. Therefore, he wouldn’t have been available for that either.
In the television series, Goode commented on Henry’s character who married Lady Mary, played by Michelle Dockery, saying: “To be honest, he was starting to lean toward being rather bland and insipid. Perhaps it’s for the best.
The film’s new version features actors like Dockery, Hugh Bonneville, Jim Carter, Phyllis Logan, Elizabeth McGovern, Laura Carmichael, Joanne Froggatt, Robert James-Collier, Allen Leech, Lesley Nicol, and Penelope Wilton who have appeared in it before.)
Additionally, some familiar faces will be back for the grand finale, such as Brendan Coyle, Michael Fox, Kevin Doyle, Raquel Cassidy, Harry Hadden-Paton, Sophie McShera, Douglas Reith, and Dominic West.
Paul Giamatti is set to return to the cast once more for the third film, taking on the character of Cora Crawley’s brother, Harold Levinson, whom we saw in a single episode during season four.
In the upcoming third movie, there will be a heartfelt homage paid to the recently deceased Dame Maggie Smith, who played the Dowager Countess Violet Crawley, whose character met her end in the 2022 sequel.
Speaking about the film, Dockery said it is “a real tribute to Maggie Smith”, who died in 2024.
Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is released in cinemas on 12 September 2025.
