Fresh information about Matt Smith’s character in “Star Wars: Starfighter” might have been disclosed recently. Several sources reported this week that Smith is set to join the Lucasfilm production as a villain. Alongside him, the cast includes Ryan Gosling and Mia Goth. Directing duties are handled by Shawn Levy, known for his work on Deadpool and Wolverine.
Matt Smith could play a military general in Star Wars: Starfighter
As reported by Jeff Sneider in his latest newsletter, Matt Smith is set to play a military general in the upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter film, which unfolds five years after the events depicted in Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. This information was further shared during a new episode of The Hot Mic with John Rocha.
In the podcast discussion, Rocha spoke about Smith possibly taking on an adversarial role in the production, hinting at whispers about the Doctor Who star. Additionally, Rocha mentioned that this character would share screen time with a female antagonist. Interestingly, it was previously announced in May 2025 that Goth had joined the project to portray an antagonist alongside Gosling.
In response to being queried about his opinions, Sneider expressed that he hadn’t been fond of Smith before asserting that neither Smith nor Goth’s portrayal as a villain in Starfighter would be remembered as legendary. He further mentioned that Smith’s character does not possess any Force abilities.
Sneider shared his feelings about Smith when asked, stating he didn’t like him before declaring neither Smith nor Goth’s villain role in Starfighter wouldn’t be iconic. He also highlighted that the character of Smith lacked Force powers.
The reporter added that Sneider compared Goth’s portrayal to a skilled military commander, but clarified that his understanding of Goth’s personality remains limited. Moreover, he chose not to disclose whether Gosling’s character possesses Force abilities in the film.
Sneider also noted that Smith wasn’t initially chosen for the Starfighter role, as “many had declined to be part of this film.” According to Deadline, Levy has discussed the part with numerous candidates, and it was reported that studio officials ultimately opted to cast the actor from House of the Dragon.
In their conversation, Rocha and Sneider discussed rumors suggesting that Smith might have been considered for the role of Young Palpatine in The Rise of Skywalker at some stage. They further explored if this speculation could have potentially influenced Smith’s selection for the Starfighter character.
Under the guidance of Levy, the director, “Star Wars: Starfighter” will be brought to life from a screenplay penned by Jonathan Tropper. Filming commences this autumn, and moviegoers in American theaters can expect to witness it on May 28, 2027.
