Matt Smith recently debuted a new hairstyle, explaining it’s a result of just finishing work on the upcoming movie Starfighter. He’ll appear in the film, directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling, and shared the story behind his haircut during an appearance on This Morning, calling it a bit “daft.”
This doesn’t signal the movie is complete, only that Smith has finished filming his part. Any further comments from him were largely just expressions of his enthusiasm for the project.
He confirmed he’s participating, and added that Ryan is involved and doing great work. He’s really enthusiastic about the project, which is being directed by Sean Levy β the director of Stranger Things, who he praises. He believes the project has a lot of potential and will be successful.
Beyond that, the movie is set five years after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, making it the furthest point in the Star Wars timeline that a film had ever covered at the time of its release. The title hints that the story will center around a fighter pilot, probably played by Ryan Gosling, but itβs unclear if this pilot will be connected to the Resistance or any other group in the Star Wars universe. Director Shawn Levy has stated that the film is a standalone Star Wars story, meaning it isn’t directly connected to existing sagas.
Levy has hinted that the movie’s story involves both accurate and inaccurate rumors. He’s clarified that it won’t be a prequel or a sequel, but rather a completely fresh story.
Ryan Gosling praised the script, calling it “just so good” during Star Wars Celebration. He highlighted its compelling story, memorable characters, and emotional depth, adding that Shawn is the ideal director to bring this particular story to life.
Matt Smith Has Completed Work on Star Wars: Starfighter
Smith previously auditioned for and was cast in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in a significant role β some fans even speculated he might be a clone of Palpatine. However, the story changed during production, and his part was ultimately cut from the film, meaning he didn’t appear in any scenes.
Levy is the director of the new Star Wars film, Starfighter, which was written by Jonathan Tropper. The movie features Ryan Gosling, Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams in its cast.
Levy expressed immense excitement and gratitude when Star Wars: Starfighter was announced. He shared that from the moment Kathy Kennedy asked him to create a new story within the Star Wars universe, it had been a lifelong dream come true, both creatively and personally. Star Wars profoundly impacted his understanding of storytelling and the lasting power of characters and cinematic moments. He feels incredibly honored to contribute to this legendary saga alongside such talented colleagues.
Star Wars: Starfighter is scheduled for theatrical release on May 28, 2027.
