Matt Smith and Emma D'Arcy miss working together as much as we miss watching them

As a dedicated fan who has followed the Targaryen dynasty through fire and blood for years, I must confess that the separation of Daemon and Rhaenyra in House of the Dragon’s second season has left me feeling like a maester without his scrolls. Matt Smith and Emma D’Arcy‘s captivating on-screen chemistry was undeniably one of the highlights of the first season, and their prolonged absence from each other has been a noticeable void in my viewing experience.

The upcoming finale for the second season of “House of the Dragon” is fast approaching. This new season has taken a distinct turn compared to the first, with many twists and turns along the way. I must admit, I believe a significant number of fans might be yearning for more scenes involving the lead actors Matt Smith and Emma D’Arcy, who portray Daemon and Rhaenyra Targaryen as a husband-wife duo. The couple had an intense confrontation at the start of the season, Daemon departed to gather troops at the crumbling Harrenhal castle, and since then, they haven’t crossed paths.

As stated by Smith and D’Arcy, they experienced a sense of distance offstage. It’s regrettable because he misses them deeply and not being with them…but it was necessary for the narrative, explained Matt Smith in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “Daemon is venturing on his own journey, diving headfirst into the depths of his own mind, plunging into the abyss,” Smith continued.

D’Arcy admitted that being away from Smith was challenging for them as well. In a conversation with Variety, they expressed their frustration, stating, “I really missed working with Matt, and it was unfortunate not to have more opportunities to do so. I don’t want to reveal too much, but there is a larger adversary on the horizon. Both characters must determine how to confront this ultimate battle.”

Rhaenyra and Daemon will almost certainly reunite in the House of the Dragon season 2 finale

It appears that the conflict D’Arcy hinted at will likely unfold in the season finale of the show. Although Rhaenyra and Daemon aren’t shown together in the upcoming episode’s trailer, we can infer that they will meet as Syrax, Rhaenyra’s dragon, is depicted traveling towards Harrenhal.

To be honest, I wouldn’t have complained if Rhaenyra and Daemon had some time apart, but I found his storyline at Harrenhal lacked excitement and seemed artificially constructed to me. Frankly, those recurring dreams didn’t keep my interest for long. We’ll find out if the series still has more dream sequences when the House of the Dragon season 2 finale airs this Sunday night on HBO and Max.
