As a huge fan of The Masked Singer, I’m getting so excited for the US version to come back! But honestly, something even cooler just happened over in the UK. One of their contestants, comedian Matt Lucas, kept his appearance a secret from his parents, and the video of their reaction when he was unmasked is absolutely priceless. It seriously made my day – their shock is just hilarious and heartwarming!
The Masked Singer (TMS) is coming back to Fox on January 7th as part of their 2026 lineup, and I’m excited to watch! While we wait, former Great British Bake Off host Matt Lucas was with his family, looking forward to their reaction when they found out he’d been on the UK version of the show. You can see the moment in a secretly-recorded Instagram video he took while they watched!

I was really struck by Lucas’ mother’s reaction – it was fantastic! It got me thinking about how much easier it is for celebrities to control what the public knows. They can keep a low profile on set much more easily than the rest of us. Still, even with all that power, it’s clearly hard to keep everything secret. Look at Drew Carey – even he had to eventually let someone know he was on The Masked Singer! It just proves that keeping things under wraps is a challenge for everyone, no matter how famous you are.

Just to be clear, Matt Lucas didn’t compete on The Masked Singer UK for very long. He was revealed as Emperor Penguin shortly after his performance, but then he joined the judging panel as a guest for the rest of that episode. It was a one-time appearance, much like Joel McHale does on the US version of the show – offering his guesses and playfully teasing Ken Jeong.
While many fans would have enjoyed seeing Lucas compete on a full season of The Masked Singer UK, the show is a big undertaking, much like its American counterpart. Contestants receive enough money to cover travel and accommodation, but that’s generally all. It requires a lot of effort, and surprisingly, some celebrities agree to participate without realizing they’ll have to perform!
I have to admit, Matt Lucas’ video really got me excited for the premiere of The Masked Singer Season 14! And I’m already hearing buzz about a Wizard of Oz night, which I think will get a lot of people I know to finally subscribe to Hulu just to see that episode. But honestly, even after 14 seasons, I think the show is still a blast and totally worth watching the whole thing. It’s still as entertaining as ever!
