Matt Damon is known for a variety of roles, and while sci-fi isn’t his usual go-to, he’s been in some fantastic films in the genre. He brought action to Elysium and played a memorable, though disliked, character in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar. But his collaboration with Ridley Scott on The Martian resulted in one of the best sci-fi movies of recent years. Unfortunately, that film will soon be removed from streaming services.
You can currently watch The Martian on Netflix, but it won’t be there much longer. It’s leaving the platform on January 1st. If you want to stream the film, now’s your last chance – it’s not exactly a Christmas movie, but it’s a great watch before it’s gone!
Released in 2015, The Martian is a science fiction film adapted from Andy Weir’s novel of the same name – he’s also the author of Project Hail Mary. Matt Damon plays Mark Watney, a botanist sent to Mars as part of a NASA mission to gather samples. During a severe dust storm, the crew mistakenly believes Watney is dead and leaves without him, forcing him to find a way to survive alone on the planet. The film boasts an impressive ensemble cast alongside Damon, including Jessica Chastain, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jeff Daniels, Kate Mara, Sebastian Stan, Benedict Wong, Donald Glover, Sean Bean, Mackenzie Davis, Michael Peña, and Kristen Wiig. Here’s what the movie is about:
After a powerful storm on Mars, astronaut Mark Watney is mistakenly believed to be dead and left behind. Stranded and with limited resources, he must rely on his intelligence and determination to survive the planet’s harsh environment. Simultaneously, NASA and a global team of scientists race against time to bring him home, and his fellow astronauts devise a risky plan to attempt a rescue.
‘The Martian’ Is Ridley Scott’s Highest Grossing Movie (So Far)

20th Century Fox
While it doesn’t feature the large-scale battles of films like Gladiator or the intense horror of Alien, The Martian was a huge hit with audiences both in theaters and on streaming platforms. It currently boasts a 91% approval rating from both critics and viewers on Rotten Tomatoes. One Rotten Tomatoes user praised the film as “Exciting, heartwarming, humorous, and surprisingly realistic, even though it’s based on a science fiction novel,” adding that the performances from Matt Damon and the rest of the cast were excellent, as expected.

The audience’s enthusiasm for the film also meant huge success at the box office. The Martian is Ridley Scott’s most financially successful movie, earning over $630 million in theaters. It significantly outperformed his other films, bringing in $127 million more than the original Gladiator and $170 million more than the 2024 release, Gladiator II.
