The new season of *Matlock* is almost here, but unfortunately, news about the show is focused on the firing of David Del Rio. He was let go after allegations of sexual assault involving his co-star, Leah Lewis. Shortly after the news broke, Lewis shared that she is receiving the support she needs.
The situation leading to Del Rio’s firing began after a reported incident on September 26 involving Leah Lewis, prompting CBS Studios to launch an internal investigation. Allegations were made on October 2, and Del Rio was immediately removed from the set, with executive producer Eric Christian Olsen (who also starred in *NCIS: LA*) present.
Filming continued after Del Rio was escorted off set, but no details were initially available about how the situation was affecting Leah Lewis. The actress herself took to Instagram with an update, revealing that she had her mother on hand and more:
Mom is with me, and we’re facing the future with love and resilience. I feel safe and supported. I’m so grateful for all the kindness and help everyone has shown us. We’re really focusing on staying strong, and that’s what I want everyone to remember.
It seems Lewis has seen the widespread support she’s received since the allegations of sexual assault came to light. We don’t know if she was present when David Del Rio was removed from the set, but it appears the situation was addressed quickly, without a lengthy investigation. Here’s what she shared on Instagram:
Filming for the first part of *Matlock* Season 2 is almost finished, and production will pause next week before resuming after Thanksgiving. It’s unclear how the show will continue Billy’s story, considering David Del Rio filmed scenes for Season 2 before the show learned of his departure. Okay, so here’s the thing: as the first season wrapped up, Sarah and Billy’s storylines were thankfully pulling apart. That gives me hope that they can continue Sarah’s arc without too much trouble once Billy’s character is gone. I’m also cautiously optimistic that the planned break will give the writers time to make any necessary adjustments and steer things in the right direction.
Season 2 of *Matlock* premieres on CBS Sunday, October 12th at 8:30 p.m. Eastern, before moving to its regular time on Thursdays at 9 p.m. Eastern. The first episode, “The Before Times,” features Matty investigating who Alfie’s father really is, Olympia working to cover up Julian’s involvement in the Wellbrexa scandal, and the team solving an arson case.
We’ll have to wait and see how long David Del Rio’s character, Billy, stays on the show, and how much attention Leah Lewis’s character, Sarah, receives.
