As a seasoned gamer of crime dramas who’s seen more twists and turns than a rollercoaster ride, I must say that Matlock has managed to surprise me right off the bat! The revelation about Madeline Matlock’s true identity was not only unexpected but also delightfully intriguing.
Typically, there’s a significant accumulation of events to uncover the principal mystery surrounding our protagonist. However, this isn’t true for the show Matlock. Instead, the secrets are revealed rather promptly.
In the trailer, it became evidently clear that Matty was involved in some secret activity. The teaser’s use of Britney Spears’ lyrics “not so innocent” and the camera’s focus on Kathy Bates’ face emphasized this point even more. Throughout, the mystery revolved around what she was searching for.
To be honest, I assumed there would be a bit of a delay before the details unfolded. I’m genuinely delighted that we were given the information promptly.
Madeline Matlock isn’t a Matlock after all!
As it transpires, our primary figure goes by another name besides Madeline Matlock. Contrary to initial impressions, she isn’t a solitary grandmother, widowed and struggling to make ends meet while raising a teenager. She wasn’t trapped in an emotionless marriage, and financial hardship isn’t a factor compelling her to work.
Two aspects of her tale held truth: indeed, she lost her daughter, and she takes care of her grandson; however, she doesn’t do it alone.
Matty is, in reality, Mrs. Kingston, living comfortably with her loving and devoted spouse at their spacious residence. She has a chauffeur at her service, indicating her affluent lifestyle. Contrary to some assumptions, they are nurturing their grandson, who is not difficult or unruly. Instead, he shows great affection for his grandmother.
As a gamer, I opted to go by the name Matlock instead of my real one to keep it separate from my daughter. My spouse and I are huge fans of the classic TV series, particularly its protagonist’s knack for meting out justice personally. This unexpected alias choice now resonates with me even more, as Matty’s reference to “just like the TV show” in the trailer finally clicks! Seems like we were onto something all along!
Matty is after justice for her daughter and others in Matlock
It appears that Matty seeks something from the law firm, as her daughter’s death from an opioid overdose has left her believing they are accountable. It was someone’s action a decade ago that prevented these opioids from being removed from circulation earlier. Had this not occurred, many more lives could have been spared today.
Matty is not only seeking justice for her own daughter, but also for the individuals who unnecessarily lost their lives due to opioid overdoses. Her pursuit goes beyond personal matters and extends to the larger community affected by this crisis.
It’s clear that Matty leverages her age as an advantage. This isn’t confined to the courtroom; she applies it throughout her professional life as well. I’m eagerly anticipating how everything develops in the future.
Matlock returns on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 9/8c on CBS.
