The recent accusations against “Matlock” star David Del Rio have added an unexpected layer of complexity to the show’s second season. Just before the series returned, co-star Leah Lewis accused Del Rio of sexual assault. They play key characters, Billy and Sarah, who frequently share scenes together. Both Billy and Sarah work alongside Madeline “Matty” Matlock (Kathy Bates) and are part of a team of junior associates led by Olympia Lawrence (Skye P. Marshall).
As a big fan of Matlock, I have to admit, some off-screen drama really hung over the show before it came back. The reports definitely got everyone talking, and it was weird because then an episode aired – Season 2, Episode 3 – that unintentionally mirrored what was happening behind the scenes. The storyline focused on a falling-out between two friends, Olympia and Madeline, and their struggle to control how things were being presented regarding a big investigation. It was a little too close to home, as it felt like the show was also showing cracks forming within its own cast and crew, right as those issues were happening in real life.
Matlock Season 2 Episode 3 Focuses On Matty & Olympia’s Relationship
In “Tomorrow Is Still Tomorrow,” the strained relationship between Matty and Olympia reaches a breaking point. These talented lawyers were once close friends, but their bond fractured when Olympia learned Madeline had been secretly working against her – Madeline had gained Olympia’s trust to get inside Jacobson Moore and unexpectedly became friends with a crucial suspect in one of her cases. The discovery that Madeline Matlock was actually Madeline Kingston further damaged their friendship. Despite continuing to work together, they now constantly compete for control.
Even after Madeline confirmed her story and Julian’s involvement in concealing the Wellbrexa document, it drove a wedge further between Matty and Olympia, with Lawrence prioritizing the father of his children. The third episode saw Olympia and Matty begin to reconcile as Madeline shifted her focus to Senior. However, Sarah and Billy clearly sense the tension, leaving Lewis and Del Rio worried about a possible split within the team and sparking important discussions among the junior associates.
Matlock’s Work Family Breakup Story Has A Sad Reality
Watching the tension between Matty and Olympia in “Tomorrow Is Still Tomorrow” brings up painful memories for Sarah, who tells Billy it reminds her of her parents’ divorce. Billy understands Sarah fears her close-knit work team might fall apart like her family did, and he challenges Olympia to admit there’s a problem with Matty. This situation feels even more serious considering the recent firing of Del Rio from the show, following a report by Lewis.
As a big fan of Matlock, it really stung to hear Sarah worry about their work family falling apart, especially knowing the show had already decided to change things up with the cast. It’s even more disheartening to learn they’re not planning to recast Billy – instead, they’re just writing him off the show later this season. So, that whole idea of them being an unbreakable team at the end of the episode “Tomorrow Is Still Tomorrow”? It feels a little ironic now, knowing what was already happening behind the scenes. The hopeful message of that episode just hits differently when you realize the reality was already diverging from it.
How Will Matlock Handle Its Work Family Fracturing?
Now that Del Rio has left the show, fans are wondering what the second half of Matlock Season 2 will look like. The first part of the season is already filmed, so some storylines featuring Billy and Sarah might feel different in light of the change. The rest of the season will likely focus on Billy’s new role at Jacobson Moore and could also explore his journey as a father. With Claudia revealing she’s pregnant, Del Rio’s departure could allow Billy to prioritize fatherhood.
Although Matlock’s exit is important to the storyline, Billy leaving won’t drastically change the show. The writers will adjust scripts, but not rewrite the entire series like they would if a core character such as Julian, Senior, Olympia, or Madeline were to leave. Billy was a main character, but his departure doesn’t impact the central Wellbrexa case, which is the driving force of the show. Ultimately, the episode “Tomorrow Is Still Tomorrow” subtly reveals the behind-the-scenes complexities and evokes unexpected, yet powerful, emotions.
