Matilda the Musical will air on BBC One this Christmas
As a long-time fan of musicals and a die-hard devotee of Roald Dahl’s timeless stories, I could hardly contain my excitement when I heard that “Matilda the Musical” is set to air on BBC One this Christmas! The film adaptation of the stage musical has been a delightful treat ever since its cinema release in the UK, and I was thrilled to finally catch it on Netflix last summer.
Matilda the Musical is set to air on BBC One this Christmas.
The film, based on the Tim Minchin stage musical, initially premiered at UK theaters two years back, and later became available on Netflix last summer.
This holiday season, the BBC has verified that the movie joins several others to be broadcast on their platform. These include Marvel’s “Black Panther,” “Minions: The Rise of Gru,” “Incredibles 2,” and “King Richard.
In the musical adaptation of “Matilda,” Alisha Weir takes on the title role, joined by Emma Thompson portraying the wicked Miss Trunchball, Lashana Lynch from “No Time to Die” as Miss Honey, Stephen Graham from “Peaky Blinders” as Mr. Wormwood, and Andrea Riseborough of “Lee” as Mrs. Wormwood.
In 2022, the movie sparked debate among British viewers on Netflix when it was simultaneously launched globally and in British cinemas. This move left UK fans eagerly awaiting its arrival on the streaming platform for several months.
Minchin addressed the criticism by posting on Twitter a sequence of messages that conveyed: “I apologize. This decision was not mine to make. As creators, we’d rather viewers watch the movie in a theater.
He mentioned: “The reason it turned out this way is due to a business motive, considering that the movie was financed by Sony and Netflix.
Since Sony isn’t a streaming service, they maintained control over the movie’s release in the UK through conventional means. While this might be frustrating (and somewhat confusing), it contributes to the quality of the film, which is one reason why it’s so excellent. XX
This holiday season, you can catch “Matilda the Musical” on BBC One. At the moment, you can also watch it online via Netflix streaming.
