As a die-hard fan of Gavin & Stacey since its inception, I must say that the anticipation for this long-awaited finale is overwhelming. Having grown up with these characters and their quirky Welsh-Essex dynamic, it feels like a part of my life is coming to an end too. The show has been a constant source of laughter and warmth for me during some of my most challenging times, providing a much-needed escape from reality.

In simpler terms, Mathew Horne shared that he was deeply emotional (crying a lot) during the making of the recent Gavin and Stacey documentary.

The actor, aged 46, portraying Gavin, confessed that the last days of shooting the Christmas Special were quite demanding since they managed to capture him in a particularly vulnerable state.

In a more casual and straightforward manner, you could say: The crew has been discreetly filming the actors throughout the set during the making of the final episode to catch some unique moments.

Matthew stated, “Recording the documentary was quite intense since they managed to capture me during an extremely vulnerable time. I’m hoping that any footage featuring me crying uncontrollably gets edited out.

‘My expectations of the this final script were exceeded. It’s nothing short of a masterpiece.’

In simpler terms, during an interview, James Corden (who plays Smithy) disclosed that there had been many emotional moments when they wrapped up shooting for this project, which will be showcased in an upcoming documentary that promises a heartfelt watch.

He added: ‘The documentary is based on this idea that we just had so much footage, from our first ever day, from the first Christmas Special and from series two and three.

‘For the 2019 Christmas special and this finale we had a film crew following the entire time.

As the lifestyle expert here, let me share a personal anecdote from behind the scenes. The final scene we filmed was the grand finale of our series. It was an emotional day filled with tears, and I truly believe that fans of our show will appreciate this small behind-the-scenes peek into those poignant moments.

Joanna Page, portraying Stacey, commented: “It was amusing to have the documentary team around… one tends to feel a bit awkward since there’s always an additional camera present during quiet times, even during personal moments like breakfast.

I’m eagerly anticipating seeing snippets from our auditions, as it will be fascinating to witness the evolution of the past 17 years and observe our personal growth throughout that time.

Speaking about her role on the show, Ruth Jones expressed great pride in its longevity and the fact that those who weren’t born when it first aired are now among its devoted fan base.

It comes after James and Ruth Jones issued a major update with their co-stars on Tuesday.

The pair participated in a special takeover on BBC Radio 2’s Breakfast Show, hosted by Zoe Ball, as they prepared for the last-ever episode of the sitcom Gavin and Stacey.

James and Ruth welcomed Joanna Page, Matt Horne, Rob Brydon, Alison Steadman, Larry Lamb, and Rob Wilfort to their extended session which lasted for a span of three hours.

Throughout the performance, they unveiled details about the forthcoming climax, reminisced about cherished moments from the series, and chatted animatedly about everything related to the holiday season.

Helen Thomas, the Head of Radio 2, shared: “The unique Gavin and Stacey control over the Radio 2 Breakfast Show will offer an extraordinary holiday delight for everyone, leading up to the highly anticipated last episode airing on Christmas Day.

I’m eagerly anticipating the arrival of Ruth, James, and their exceptional colleagues at the station, so we can sprinkle a bit of holiday enchantment for our Radio 2 audience!

Ruth acknowledged that viewers of Gavin and Stacey could find the Christmas special unexpected, given her and James Corden’s discussion about the last-ever episode.

Fervent followers of the series have been discussing among themselves what they think might be the ending, as the creators shared some insights during their talk on Monday.

Several queries are still pending from the previous episode, such as what transpired following Nessa’s surprising proposal to Smithy.

Although details about this year’s Christmas special are being closely guarded, Ruth has confirmed that they will indeed be concluding the sitcom.

In her interview with The Big Issue, she mentioned that the ending might surprise viewers and emphasized that there will be no return for the series.

James commented: “On Christmas Day, what you’ll witness is the conclusion of a 20-year romantic tale, one that I hope demonstrates, in no uncertain terms, that love can be intricate, chaotic, and universal.

In addition, Joanna shared that filming the last day of the Christmas special was a distressing experience for her, as she candidly discussed the emotional farewell on set.

She said: ‘Being on set for the last time with everybody for the last day was traumatic. I knew I was going to cry as soon as I walked on set.

In a moment, I beheld Steve, our first assistant director, and my emotions overwhelmed me, causing me to weep. Upon seeing Sophie Hebron, our second AD, I broke down in tears once more. Overwhelmed by the emotions, I retreated to my trailer where Julia Davis joined me, and I continued crying uncontrollably. This was because it felt like an immense journey that had come to a close.

‘So I found it very emotional but then in between that, hysterically funny, because the last scene we filmed was a funny one, so I just alternated between hysterically crying and hysterically laughing.’

On Christmas Day at 9 PM, catch the final episode of Gavin & Stacey on BBC One and iPlayer. And on New Year’s Day at 7 PM, don’t miss a special farewell to Gavin & Stacey on BBC One and iPlayer.
