mastermind JAPAN & BAPE Create “Tropical Skull Camo” in 16th Collection

Summary

  • BAPE and mastermind JAPAN collaborate for the 16th time with a new collection dropping on August 8.
  • The duo delivers a new “Tropical Skull Camo” in a satin summer set and black graphic staples, including acid wash tees and trousers.

Once again, Bape has teamed up with Mastermind Japan, marking their 16th collaboration. This time around, they’ve introduced a fresh collection inspired by the “Tropical Skull Camo” concept. In this joint effort, Nigo’s popular streetwear brand and Masaaki Homma’s label have created a unique visual style. They’ve blended Bape’s fun camouflage patterns with Mastermind’s signature dark style, resulting in an intriguing contrast.

The star item in this collection is a summer outfit called Tropical Skull Camo, which includes a camp collar shirt and coordinating shorts. The entire set features an image of greyscale tropical foliage with the mastermind’s skull and crossbones and BAPE’s gorilla emblem scattered throughout. Despite its dark, punk-like aesthetic, the outfit is made of satin fabric, providing a soft and lightweight feel for the wearer.

As a fan, I can’t help but appreciate the unique touch added to basic graphics through the use of unexpected laces at the hem and tonal black graphics that subtly shimmer. Other pieces, like tees and trousers, are enhanced with an acid wash, giving them a worn-in feel. The designs on each piece differ, ranging from one where BAPE’s star logo is layered over a skull to others in which the motifs are spread across different sections of the garment.

On August 8, 2025, the eagerly anticipated collaboration between Japan and BAPE, their 16th collection, will go on sale at BAPE retail stores across Japan and their online webshop.
