MasterChef star Matt Preston reveals his surprising number one food destination in the world

As a lifestyle expert with extensive travel and culinary experiences under my belt, I must say that Portugal, particularly Fuseta and Algarve, has truly stolen my heart when it comes to food destinations around the world. The fresh seafood cooked in traditional rustic methods is simply unparalleled, and the casual street-side grills offer an authentic experience that’s hard to beat. I’m talking about local turbot, tuna, calamari, grilled over coals with a side of boiled potatoes and tomato salad – all for under $100!

Matt Preston has revealed his favourite food destination in the world. 

Over the course of her life, the 63-year-old ex-judge from MasterChef Australia has traveled extensively, sampling the most exceptional dishes the world has to offer.

However, the food expert holds a particular fondness in his heart towards Portugal, particularly the areas of Fuseta and Algarve.

Matt highly commended the exceptional local seafood, prepared using classic, earthy techniques and delivered fresh from nearby marketplaces.

He shares with news.com.au that it isn’t only eateries in the local area who see benefits, but also street food vendors near the waterfront as well.

Here, grilling fish on charcoal is deeply cherished, and these simple, spontaneous food stalls excel at this particular craft. They use plastic tables, chairs, and paper napkins for their humble setup, yet they execute it flawlessly regardless if it’s local turbot, tuna, or calamari.

Matt added that the total cost for a complete meal at his preferred restaurant, Cafe dos Mestres, is less than one hundred dollars.

He mentioned that the entire fish, adorned merely with a sprinkle of crushed garlic and olive oil, arrives at the table. Accompanying it are boiled potatoes and a straightforward tomato salad seasoned with dried oregano, he noted about the delightful meals available.

Following the announcement, it’s clear that the food critic is choosing to step away from ABC Melbourne to devote more time to his loved ones and explore opportunities beyond radio broadcasting.

Matt has been the host for the past three years of the well-liked Saturday morning show on that particular station.

ABC veteran Jacinta Parsons is set to take over the position following Preston’s last performance on December 14.

He informed the Herald Sun that it’s a significant undertaking, as the person he cherishes wishes to return home on weekends, being once again referred to as her husband.

This choice opens up a multitude of activities I couldn’t engage in before. Now seems like the perfect moment to take on some unconventional tasks that my schedule previously didn’t allow.

He told the publication that amongst his personal plans was an ambitious scheme to swim from Albania to Corfu – an annual charity swim of 3kms.

Matt also revealed he wanted to attend the Jaipur Literature Festival in India.

Elsewhere in the chat Matt celebrated his time at he station.

‘I have had an amazing three years talking about so much more than food,’ he began.

Working on the radio is an entirely novel experience for me, making it quite a significant hurdle. However, I’ve had the privilege of conversing with an incredible diversity of individuals from various walks of life, as well as enjoying real-time communication with listeners through phone calls and text messages.

The TV and radio star, who has hosted the ABC show program since 2022, added he would miss doing ‘The Cat and Matt Show’ – a sports segment with Catherine Murphy. 

Matt rose to fame on MasterChef Australia after joining the reality show in 2009.

In July 2019, he and other judges on the well-known cooking show with George Calombaris and Gary Mehigan, were dismissed from the program.

In 1999, I found my partner for life, Emma, whom I had the pleasure of meeting for the first time back in 1993. Our paths crossed when I, a food enthusiast originally from Britain, relocated to Australia with a former companion.

The couple share three children: Jonathan, William, and Sadie.
