Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming live-action series based on the video game *Mass Effect* has announced its five main characters. *Mass Effect* is a popular sci-fi game series created by BioWare, where players follow Commander Shepard’s journey through a galaxy full of alien life, advanced technology, and intricate political challenges overseen by the Citadel Council.
According to Variety, Prime Video is working on a live-action series as of November 2024. Daniel Casey, known for his work on the 2023 blockbuster *F9: The Fast Saga*, will be writing and executive producing the show. In June 2025, Variety also reported that the *Mass Effect* series is progressing smoothly, having brought on Doug Jung, who worked on *Star Trek Beyond*, as its showrunner.
Entertainment industry insider Daniel Richtman recently revealed the five main characters who will be central to the story of the upcoming live-action Mass Effect series.
The 5 Main Video Game Characters of Prime Video’s Mass Effect Show
Commander Shepard

I saw the initial casting call Richtman shared, and they’re looking for a guy to play the lead – someone between 30 and 39, of any ethnicity. They even said they’re hoping for someone who looks a bit like a younger Colin Farrell!
This casting news is probably for the role of Commander Shepard from *Mass Effect*. In the game, Shepard is a highly skilled soldier working for the Systems Alliance, dedicated to stopping the Reapers – a powerful, intelligent alien race of spaceships.
From the very beginning of the original Mass Effect (2007), Commander Shepard’s job is to stop Saren Arterius, a dangerous agent who’s secretly working with a powerful enemy known as The Reapers. Ultimately, Shepard must rally allies to prevent a massive Reaper invasion.
Liara T’Soni

A recent casting call description mentions a female lead, aged 34 to 39, for an alien role. Many fans speculate this character might be Liara T’Soni, an Asari – a species comprised entirely of women who possess telekinetic powers and play a significant role in galactic diplomacy. She was already 106 years old when she first appeared in the *Mass Effect* video game.
Liara is a key member of Commander Shepard’s team and a leading expert on the Protheans, largely due to her ability to interpret information from their ancient beacons. She’s also a powerful fighter, capable of controlling dark energy and creating mass effect fields in combat. Adding to her importance, her mother, Matriarch Benezia, is closely connected to the main villain, Saren, a powerful Spectre.
Female Shepard

The creators of *Mass Effect* are looking for an actress to play a new female character, aged 30 to 49. This character is a human who will tell a story happening on Earth, running alongside the main plot.
This character might represent a female Commander Shepard operating on Earth. The game *Mass Effect* lets players choose to play as a female Shepard with the same mission: stopping the Reapers. However, being female changes some of her interactions and can lead to different results in the game.
Having a narrative set on Earth would be historic for Mass Effect since the game was primarily set in space. This would give fans an opportunity to learn more about the perspective of humans on Earth, specifically through this female character.
Spectre Saren

The show is also looking for its main villain: a man between 40 and 60 who is skilled at physical character work, similar to actor Doug Jones.
Okay, let me tell you about this villain. We’re almost certainly dealing with Spectre Saren, and he’s *bad news*. Think of him as a super-skilled operative, a lot like Commander Shepard, but where Shepard fights for good, Saren’s gone completely off the rails. He’s utterly contemptuous of humanity, and what’s really chilling is he actually believes he can *control* the Reapers. It’s a power play on a galactic scale, and he’s terrifyingly convinced it’ll work.
Saren is a ruthless villain determined to seize power at any cost. He plans to strike at the Citadel and create chaos, paving the way for the Reapers to invade and wipe out all organic life.
Garrus Vakarian

The report’s casting call concludes with a search for a male actor, aged 30 to 49, to play a soldier or fighter. They’re looking for someone with a strong, athletic build – ideally, someone who looks like a wrestler.
The role could go to Garrius Vakarian, a talented Turian sniper who is a steadfast friend to Commander Shepard. Beyond being an excellent marksman, he has a personal mission in the first *Mass Effect* game: relentlessly hunting down a criminal named Dr. Saleon, a figure from his past with connections to C-Sec (Citadel Security Services).
It would be fantastic to see Garrus in a live-action Mass Effect series. His witty personality and unwavering loyalty to Shepard are among the best parts of the games, and would translate really well to the screen.
