Mass Effect Trilogy Director’s New Studio is Shutting Down Due to Funding Shortfall

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia and a tinge of sadness upon hearing about the closure of Humanoid Origin, the studio founded by none other than gaming legend Casey Hudson. This man has been instrumental in shaping some of the most iconic narratives in the realm of video games, from the original Mass Effect trilogy to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

After leaving BioWare for a second time in 2020, the former Mass Effect director Casey Hudson has revealed that his recently established studio, Humanoid Origin (founded in 2021), will be shutting down operations.

Earlier today, it was announced on LinkedIn that Humanoid Origin is closing down. The announcement explained that despite our attempts to protect the studio from wider issues within the industry, an unforeseen lack of financing forced us to discontinue operations.

The statement laments that the studio won’t be able to finish its upcoming sci-fi universe, but emphasizes that its top priority is now assisting its employees following the closure. In other words, “At this moment, our primary focus is on our team, and we are dedicated to helping them find new jobs.” This is what the statement further explains.

During our collaborative period, the team made significant strides and showcased that it’s feasible to create exceptional outputs in an environment that encourages joy and innovation. We appreciate their skills, bravery, and camaraderie. Additionally, we express our gratitude to everyone who stood by us throughout our expedition.

Previously, Hudson held the position of General Manager at BioWare and directed the original Mass Effect Trilogy, along with Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. At his independent studio, Humanoid Origin, he was working on a new AAA project for multiple platforms – a game centered around characters in a fresh sci-fi universe.
