Mason Thames Recalls Filming A Black Phone 2 Scene So Intense It Made A Producer Ask His Mom If He Was ‘OK’

Be warned: this article reveals major plot details from Black Phone 2. If you haven’t watched the movie yet, you might want to avoid reading further!

In Black Phone 2, Mason Thames returns as Finney Blake, still deeply affected by his terrifying experience with The Grabber (from The Black Phone). While he survived, Finney isn’t feeling like a hero – he’s struggling with trauma, anger, fear, and sadness. The sequel offers a powerful emotional release for Finney when he finally faces his tormentor again, and reportedly allowed Thames himself to express a lot of pent-up emotion during the scene.

Now that Black Phone 2 is available digitally, I recently spoke with Mason Thames about filming the movie. I was particularly curious about the climactic fight between Finney and The Grabber. Thames described how they filmed the intense scene where Finney, fueled by rage, grabs the killer’s hair and repeatedly slams his face into the icy lake.

I didn’t actually hit Ethan Hawke. We filmed a scene where I pretended to, starting with the line, ‘Hell isn’t flames, it’s ice.’ After that initial take, they switched him out for a lifelike dummy – a full head with a realistic skull, muscles, blood, and even brains. I remember it felt strangely therapeutic, almost like being in a rage room.

Rage rooms are becoming popular places to relieve stress and anger. People go there to break things – like old dishes, furniture, and appliances – using their hands or tools. Usually, the items are just general junk, but actor Mason Thames got a unique opportunity: he was allowed to smash a lifelike dummy.

It seems he found the experience very beneficial, even more so than some of his colleagues anticipated. The actor explained that his intense performance actually prompted one of the film’s producers to call his mother, who was present on set, to check on her after witnessing it.

I completely let loose during that scene. I remember everyone calling ‘Cut,’ and then it went quiet. The producer looked at my mom, who was watching on the monitor, and asked if I was alright. It was a really fun experience, and honestly, it was my favorite scene to film in the whole movie.
