M*A*S*H vet Mike Farrell breaks his silence about the death of his ‘dynamo’ costar Loretta Swit at age 87

Actor Mike Farrell, who starred in M*A*S*H, reminisces about his time working alongside the late Loretta Swit following her unexpected demise a week ago.

At 86 years old now, Farrell vividly remembers the shared moments on set and the strong friendship that developed between them while working on the medical drama series more than four decades past.

From 1975 to 1983, the actor played Captain B.J. Hunnicutt on the popular TV series for its entire run, except for 11 episodes. Conversely, Swit was a regular cast member as Major Margaret ‘Hot Lips’ Houlihan, appearing in all but 11 of the show’s 251 episodes across its 11 seasons.

He shared with TMZ on Tuesday that Loretta was an incredibly energetic and dynamic person, recalling his deceased co-star who passed away from suspected natural causes on May 30th at the age of 87.

Behind the scenes, he described her as both sweet and demure. But the moment she stepped onto the set, she transformed into her fiery character, Hot Lips, immediately.

In his words, she was constantly engaged in activities; it could be her work on a movie set. Since there’s often downtime on the set, she would often crochet or read books as well.

As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but remember the delightful detail that Swit had an affection for needlepoint embroidery, transforming it into a cherished pastime. With heartfelt dedication, she crafted unique gifts tailored for every one of her colleagues, a testament to her thoughtfulness and creative spirit.

What will forever stand out about her is her tendency to remain calm and modest, yet gentle, and then she’d be summoned to perform a scene where she would transform into an energetic, boisterous version of Margaret,” he explained.

I can’t help but recall moments when she’d fiercely demand action, fixing what went awry with a firm, “How could you let this happen?!” It’s as if her passion for excellence is contagious, driving everyone around her to strive for the best.

In a tranquil manner, she would compose herself, stroll away, find a seat, and carry on with her needlework. I couldn’t help but smile as I observed this peaceful scene unfold.

He commended her exceptional showcase of the skill she possessed, as well as her capacity to concentrate.

He mentioned that the time the actors dedicated to the show was instrumental in creating strong relationships among them, making them feel like a united family.

He clarified that we grew very connected to one another, sharing significant parts of our lives. Over the years, it’s sad to say, but many of our companions have left us.

Regarding the gradual loss of his old friends and colleagues, he expressed it as a challenging experience.

He mentioned that the ongoing tradition of their series is being upheld by four team members, which include him, Alan Alda, Jamie Farr, and Gary Burghoff.

Farrell remarked, recalling Swit, saying she always persevered, which is why we often referred to her as such.

As a die-hard enthusiast, I can’t help but share the heartening words attributed to this beloved figure. He reassured us, his loyal followers, not to shed tears because he believes she must be overjoyed to be with Harry Morgan, someone she held dear, and also our other cherished cast members who have moved on.
