A shelved storyline involving the Young Avengers and Kang could have solved a recurring problem within the Marvel Cinematic Universe and how it develops its characters. The MCU is known for its ambitious, long-term, interconnected storytelling, but it hasn’t been perfect.
Creating a huge, interconnected cinematic universe like the Marvel Cinematic Universe is incredibly difficult and bound to have issues. One recent problem is the way the MCU has been building towards a Young Avengers team without giving them a proper spotlight – a situation that original plans for Avengers 5 appeared designed to fix.
The Unused Plans For A Young Avengers Vs Kang Fight Would’ve Addressed A Years-Old MCU Issue

I was reading a Reddit AMA with Michael Waldron – you probably know him as the creator of Loki, but he’s also been working on Avengers 5 for a while, even back when it was still called The Kang Dynasty. He revealed that he and Jeff Loveness actually pitched a story where the Young Avengers would battle a version of Kang in the movie. It’s pretty cool to hear what they were considering!
Waldron explained the plan was for the team to battle a version of Kang who turned out to be a newcomer to time-traveling villainy, much less experienced than other Kangs.
Jeff Loveness and I came up with a story idea where the Young Avengers would fight a version of Kang, and we were really excited about it. But then we found out this Kang was new to the job – he literally had a card saying to be patient with him! It was a bit of a letdown. We thought he might end up being the lizard-like Kang from the ‘Kang Dynasty’ movie, but we weren’t sure. Still, it was a fun brainstorming session.
This story could have been an amazing introduction for the Young Avengers on the big screen. It would have explained how they were strong enough to defeat a powerful villain like a Kang variant, and also allowed them to continue developing as a team.
The Young Avengers haven’t had a major role in the MCU films since Ms. Marvel and Ironheart first appeared in 2022, and haven’t been featured as prominently as many fans hoped. This idea – focusing a major story on them – would have been a great way to showcase the team, but the MCU still has opportunities to do that in the future.
Avengers: Doomsday & Secret Wars Can Still Give The Young Avengers The Spotlight They Need

Although the initial idea of the Young Avengers battling a young version of Kang won’t happen due to some challenges, there’s still a great chance for the team to truly develop in the next two Avengers movies. The post-credits scene in The Marvels suggests they’re just starting to form, and it would be a natural fit for them to unite when a major crisis hits.
As a huge movie fan, I’m really excited about the potential Doctor Doom storyline. It sounds like his plans are massive enough to bring all the heroes together, and I’m hoping that means we finally get to see the Young Avengers team up on the big screen! It would be awesome to see them fighting alongside the more established heroes, and it would really drive home just how dangerous Doom is if everyone needs to pitch in.
Even if Avengers: Secret Wars restarts the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it would be smart to properly introduce the Young Avengers and expand on the MCU’s history by showing them working as a team. Only time will tell how the next two Avengers films will incorporate these characters.
