Everyone expected Avengers: Doomsday to be a huge hit, but recent reports, especially from Simu Liu detailing Robert Downey Jr.’s elaborate set nicknamed ‘Downey Land,’ reveal just how much money the production is costing. While ‘Downey Land’ doesn’t directly appear in the film, its expense is raising questions about the movie’s overall budget.
Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe is exciting, especially as he moves from playing Iron Man to Doctor Doom. However, the buzz surrounding his return might be overblown and points to a bigger problem. According to Variety, no expense is being spared for his role – the set built for him, reportedly a trailer park, is far from simple or cheap.
Avengers: Doomsday’s ‘Downey Land,’ as Explained by Shang-Chi’s Simu Liu

Simu Liu, returning as Shang-Chi for another Marvel film after Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021), recently shared a fascinating story about being invited to what everyone on set called ‘Downey Land.’ The nickname itself highlights just how much presence Robert Downey Jr. had while filming.
Robert Downey Jr. famously had a large setup on set – a whole collection of trailers and a dedicated base camp area – that everyone jokingly referred to as ‘Downey Land’.
Simu Liu was surprised to find a complete buffet had been set out. But what really stood out was the unique decoration in the ‘Downey Land’ area.
I’ll never forget my first time at Downey Land. It was like walking into a tent filled with amazing art, very similar to Andy Warhol’s style, but everything featured Robert Downey Jr. It really showed how aware he is of himself and his public image.
The news has spread rapidly, and it’s uncertain whether Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday will be his last role. However, his recent creative venture, dubbed ‘Downey Land,’ has sparked a lot of debate and criticism about its self-indulgent nature.
‘Downey Land’ is Polarizing, to Say the Least

Some fans have noticed Simu Liu’s careful and polite description of Robert Downey Jr.’s elaborate set decorations. Liu called Downey Jr.’s choices “self-aware” and referred to the large collection of items as a “base camp,” leading some to believe he was being intentionally diplomatic. Reactions online have been mixed; one Reddit user, Gunslinger_69, said the decorations made them dislike Downey Jr., while another, Zord_boy, wasn’t bothered and simply found it amusing.
It wouldn’t be surprising to see Doctor Doom surrounded by paintings that show off his own greatness, if the filmmakers are going that route. And the elaborate set built for Robert Downey Jr.’s character in Avengers: Doomsday might be a way to emphasize his portrayal of someone new.
This isn’t the first time Robert Downey Jr. has created an elaborate on-set setup, jokingly referred to as ‘Downey Land.’ It seems these extravagant displays are more about his playful personality than any serious change in his character, both on and off screen. As one Reddit user, wwaffles, pointed out, Downey Jr. has been building these elaborate trailer setups since at least the movie Captain America: Civil War.
I heard something really funny from the cast’s press conference! Apparently, Robert Downey Jr. has so many trailers on set that Daniel Brühl, who plays Zemo, jokingly called it a whole “village!” And get this – it sounds like you need an invitation just to wander over and have lunch at one of RDJ’s “base camps,” which a few of the actors have mentioned. It’s pretty wild!
Avengers: Doomsday’s Budget and Reverence for RDJ Are Exorbitant

Calling the set of ‘Downey Land’ lavish would be an understatement, but it’s not necessarily a negative thing. Many of the people who work on it likely appreciate the luxurious environment, particularly since the film itself is a major production.
While Avengers: Doomsday is expected to be expensive, the unusually high budget seems partly due to lavish catering. Even without that, a movie with so many big stars would naturally cost a lot. The filmmakers are likely going to great lengths to maintain the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s reputation for high-quality blockbuster films.
Reddit user JenSY542 pointed out that the film’s budget is shockingly high. The claim that Robert Downey Jr. had a dedicated “base camp” – something several MCU actors have mentioned with admiration – seems like a strange and wasteful use of funds, even considering his significant role in the MCU’s success.
