Disney+ has ordered a second season of its hit series, Wonder Man, bringing back stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Ben Kingsley. The renewal isn’t a surprise, as the show received positive reviews – a 91% rating from critics and an 87% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. What is surprising is that Disney waited until the entire first season had aired before making the decision to renew, a first for their Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) shows.
Most Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) shows have only lasted one season. The exceptions are Loki, What If…?, and recently, Daredevil: Born Again. These three shows were either planned for multiple seasons from the beginning, or were quickly renewed during production of their first season. Unlike these, Wonder Man wasn’t renewed until almost two months after its first season finished airing. This difference suggests a change in how Marvel is handling its streaming series.
Wonder Man Was an Unexpected Success for the MCU
Disney carefully plans the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s movies and TV shows years ahead, often greenlighting projects well in advance. This approach has clear advantages. For shows intended to run for multiple seasons, it allows the cast and crew to seamlessly transition from filming one season to the next, resulting in quicker releases. For example, the second season of Loki premiered only a year after the first, which likely wouldn’t have been possible without early development.
While planning projects far in advance has benefits, it also has drawbacks. It makes the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s schedule less flexible, making it harder to adapt to audience feedback. Plus, there’s a risk of upsetting fans if announced movies or shows never actually get made. For example, Blade and other projects have faced delays, and many fans are starting to doubt they’ll ever be released, at least not anytime soon.
Disney took a cautious approach with Wonder Man, releasing it in a way that allowed them to gauge how audiences would react. The series was a gamble because it didn’t rely heavily on typical superhero action, which fans expected from Marvel. Instead, it centered on an actor trying to make it big within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the world of superhero entertainment.
I have to say, with so many superhero shows feeling the same these days, ‘Echo’ really stood out! It was so different and people clearly loved it. I’m thrilled Disney is giving it a second season – it’s fantastic to see them support something truly unique. Hopefully, with the first season’s success, they’ll even be able to give the creators, Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, a bigger budget to really bring their vision to life!
Wonder Man’s Renewal Hints at the Future of the MCU
If the current trend continues, it will be crucial for viewers to actively support the MCU shows they enjoy. The recent renewal of Wonder Man demonstrates this – it was greenlit for another season thanks to positive reviews and strong viewership. Brad Winderbaum, an executive producer, explained to The New York Times in January 2026, shortly after the show launched, that Wonder Man‘s future depended on attracting a large audience on Disney+, and it successfully did so.
If people like the show, it’s important to let Disney know so they’ll be more likely to make more seasons. This new way Disney+ is doing things also gives hope that other shows that haven’t been renewed yet, like Moon Knight, might get another season down the line.
The renewal of Wonder Man suggests Disney is becoming more adaptable with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This means the franchise can now build on its wins and quickly address any missteps. This flexibility will be crucial for the MCU’s future, especially as it moves into Phase Seven and beyond, allowing it to give fans what they want after the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga with Avengers: Secret Wars.
