Marvel's rumored plans may be changing the Young Avengers project to a Champions series

As a long-time Marvel enthusiast who’s been following the cinematic universe since its inception, I find this news about the possible shift from a Young Avengers movie to a TV show titled The Champions intriguing!

It looks like Marvel’s plans for a Young Avengers project may be changing into a bold new series!

It’s become apparent that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been strategizing towards what essentially is a Young Avengers film. The strong hint was one of the post-credits scenes in The Marvels, where Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) and Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) had a conversation about forming a team, inviting Cassie Lang (Kathryn Newton) to be part of it.

In addition to Ironheart and Agatha All Along, the Marvel Cinematic Universe establishes the identity of Wiccan, Scarlet Witch’s son, who is on a quest to find his lost twin brother. This setup seems to be paving the way for a Young Avengers film.

According to reliable Marvel source Daniel Richtman, who has accurately predicted franchise news in the past, there seems to be a change in direction for the project. Instead of a Young Avengers movie, it’s being suggested that Marvel is planning to produce a TV series titled “The Champions”. This adaptation maintains the original concept but offers a broader possibility for success.

A short history of the teen heroes

Marvel has been known to feature teams of young superheroes, such as the popular “The New Warriors” comic series from the 1990s. In 2005, they introduced “Young Avengers,” a group made up of teenagers who were either relatives of established heroes or new characters. This series was highly praised for its well-developed characters and charming elements, including the romance between Wiccan and Hulking, a shapeshifter.

Initially, the book experienced some ups and downs until 2014 when it was renamed “Champions”. This title was inspired by a brief superteam from the 1970s. The new version introduced teen characters such as Ms. Marvel, Nova, the Spider-man (Miles Morales), and others, and has since become a favorite among readers.

According to Richtman, one main reason for the title adjustment is because unlike comic books, real-life individuals grow older. Therefore, by the time this project gets filmed, some of these younger actors might no longer convincingly play teenage characters. Dropping “Young” from the title seems like a wise decision in such a scenario.

Additionally, it contributes to their portrayal as less significant characters in comparison to the primary Avengers. However, elevating them into leading roles could potentially attract more viewers due to character development and relationship-building during their inaugural mission. Transposing this scenario from a movie to a TV series is advantageous since it allows for extended time to establish the team dynamics and bonds.

It’s important to mention that Disney hasn’t verified Richtman’s claim or his speculation about “Hawkeye” Season 2 filming in the upcoming year. Yet, intriguingly, a fresh show on the Disney Treasure Cruise Ship presents a video with America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez), Cassie Lang (Kathryn Newton), and Riri Williams/Ironheart (Dominique Thorne) socializing together. This could potentially be Marvel testing audience reactions to these characters as part of their strategy.

It’s uncertain, but the prospect of former Champions appearing on Disney+ suggests that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) may aim to expand its audience during the upcoming phase.
