Marvel’s Phase 6 Is Confirmed to Fix the MCU’s Television Issue

The upcoming TV lineup in Marvel’s Phase 6 aims to address a significant concern raised by fans about the MCU’s streaming releases during Phases 4 and 5: the extended length of certain productions following the Infinity Saga. Since “Avengers: Endgame,” the Marvel Cinematic Universe has experienced highs and lows, with shows like “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Agatha All Along” counterbalanced by series such as “Secret Invasion” or “Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania.” This inconsistency in quality has often been attributed to various factors, but one recurring criticism has been the excessive episode count of certain shows post-Infinity Saga.

A common complaint among MCU fans concerning Phases 4/5 (concluding with the debut of Disney+’s Ironheart series) revolved around the abbreviated episode counts for several major series during this period. Previously, eight episodes per season had been customary, but Phases 4 and 5 cut back to six episodes or fewer in some instances. This adjustment resulted in shorter seasons for productions like Loki Season 2, Secret Invasion, and Echo, causing many fans to express a desire for more content in numerous cases.

Luckily, it’s been verified that Phase 6 resolves the significant problem with Phases 4 and 5 by reinstating longer episode durations.

In this upcoming phase of Marvel Cinematic Universe storytelling, the initial three live-action series – “Wonder Man”, the second season of “Daredevil: Born Again”, and “Vision Quest” – will each consist of eight episodes and be released on Disney+ over the next 18 months.

This is quite a departure from the six-episode seasons of “Secret Invasion,” “Loki” Season 2, and “Echo,” all of which launched Marvel’s Phase 5 television lineup in 2023.

As a movie aficionado, I’m thrilled about the upcoming eight-episode plan kicking off Phase 6! This change means that each series will have ample time to develop, something fans like me have been yearning for. It also promises a more fitting episode count per season, addressing concerns we’ve had with certain titles in the past.

Marvel’s Phase 6 of the MCU begins on Friday, July 25, with the release of Matt Shakman’s “Fantastic Four: First Steps” in cinemas. This upcoming MCU film marks the start of the final chapter of the franchise’s Multiverse Saga, featuring at least six TV series, two special events, and four movies – including two new Avengers films.

Why Did Marvel Studios Change Its TV Strategy?

One challenging aspect for Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) enthusiasts transitioning from Phase 4 to Phase 5 was the studio’s choice to make their streaming series more succinct. Upon reflection, this shift led to shows concluding too swiftly, leaving insufficient time to delve deeper into character development and world-building.

Eventually, the reduced number of episodes could be attributed to significant transformations taking place within Marvel Studios, as well as across the broader entertainment industry during that period.

After the decline in the streaming market, Phase 4 and Phase 5 of the series were launched, and Hollywood started to understand the financial implications of a streaming-centric production. This, in turn, resulted in stricter budgeting for TV productions at Marvel Studios, which sometimes manifested in fewer episodes being produced.

Although Marvel/Disney hasn’t entirely mastered their streaming financials yet, they’ve made significant adjustments in their creative approach to align more effectively with today’s TV and film industry standards.

As per statements from Brad Winderbaum, Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation at Marvel Studios, the studio is shifting its approach towards television production, concentrating more on the conventional method. They are now primarily creating shows that revolve around established characters, aiming to develop multiple seasons worth of content.

Instead, this approach departs from the model where Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) treats movies and TV shows as having the same value, a practice they’ve maintained since Disney+ debuted in 2019.
