After an 18-year absence, The Punisher is returning to movie theaters this summer. Frank Castle, the vigilante anti-hero, first appeared on the big screen in the 1980s with Dolph Lundgren in the role. Now, he’s preparing for his fourth live-action film appearance.
The Punisher, recently featured in the Daredevil: Born Again series, made a brief appearance in the trailer for the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie, setting up a first-time showdown with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. While a fan favorite, the Punisher’s previous movie ventures haven’t always been successful; he actually starred in Marvel’s lowest-performing film to date.
Marvel’s Lowest Ever Box Office Came From A 2008 Movie
Released in 2008 as a fresh take on the Punisher character, the action movie Punisher: War Zone didn’t perform well in theaters. It only made $10.2 million, making it the lowest-grossing Marvel movie of all time.
This covers every Marvel movie ever made, including older films not produced by Marvel Studios or Disney. It starts with Howard the Duck, which many consider to be the first Marvel film released in theaters as we know them today.
Ray Stevenson, who sadly passed away and was known for his role in the 2023 Star Wars series Ahsoka, plays Frank Castle in Punisher: War Zone. The movie follows the typical Punisher story, where Castle fights against the city’s criminal leaders. Dominic West plays the villain, Jigsaw, and the cast also includes Julie Benz and Colin Salmon.
The movie flopped with both audiences and critics. It earned a 29% rating from critics and 42% from fans on Rotten Tomatoes, and is now largely considered a footnote in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Punisher Returns To The Big-Screen MCU This Summer
The Punisher is returning to the movies, despite past film adaptations not performing well. This time, however, Jon Bernthal will reprise his popular role as the vigilante, but as a supporting character instead of the main focus. Notably, this will be the first time the Punisher appears in a PG-13 rated film, setting it apart from previous appearances.
The new Spider-Man movie, Brand New Day, is expected to be a much bigger financial success than the previous one, War Zone, which didn’t even earn back a third of its production costs. Considering Spider-Man: No Way Home earned almost $2 billion globally, it’s highly likely the Punisher’s next film will perform better than his previous appearance.
