Marvel’s Latest ‘Thunderbolts’ Teaser Hints at A24 Connections

In the latest “Thunderbolts” preview, Marvel subtly acknowledges indie film sensation A24, suggesting ties between the movie and their own cinematic universe. Instead of featuring the usual large-scale action sequences, this trailer opts for a techno soundtrack and title cards highlighting cast members, craftspeople, and artists who have previously worked on A24 productions.

The initial sneak peek of the film was unveiled by Letterboxd, showcasing an “exclusive first look” at Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus in their Marvel costumes as Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes (Winter Soldier), and Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. Interestingly, they were also credited for their roles in A24 productions – specifically, Pugh from ‘Midsommar’, Stan from ‘A Different Man’, and Louis-Dreyfus from ‘You Hurt My Feelings’. The Marvel logo underwent an A24 makeover, and the teaser incorporated stylish cards acknowledging contributions such as “the editor of Minari” and “the writers and directors of Beef.” Additionally, other A24 films like ‘The Green Knight’ and its cinematographer Andrew Droz Palermo, ‘Hereditary’ production designer Grace Yun, and the composers of ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’, Son Lux, were given a shoutout.

The teaser showcases the shared artistic ground between Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and A24 productions. Created in partnership with director Jake Schreier, it was designed to stand out as something unique, according to Schreier’s statement at last year’s Comic Con to Variety: “Our objective, as set by Kevin [Feige, president of Marvel Studios], was to create something distinct. If you can envision a Marvel film made by those types of creators and imagine where those tones might intersect, then I believe that’s what we aim to have achieved.”

Emily Pugh, in an interview with Empire Magazine, described the upcoming movie as “a quite badass indie-style assassin film featuring Marvel superheroes.” A24 has also responded positively to this project. The film, titled Thunderbolts, will be released on May 2nd.
