Marvel's Invincible Iron Man ends perfectly

As a longtime comic book enthusiast and avid gamer, I have followed Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man, through various adventures and storylines. Gerry Duggan’s run on “Invincible Iron Man” during Marvel Comics’ Krakoan era was a standout for me, particularly because of the unexpected twists and connections to other X-Men stories.

During the Krakoan period of the X-Men saga, Gerry Duggan stood out as one of the leading writers. He penned “Fall of the House of X,” “X-Men,” and “Invincible Iron Man.” The latter title took fans by surprise; although Tony Stark has ties to the X-Men, they’re not extensive enough for him to be expected to play a significant role in thwarting Orchis and Nimrod. Thankfully, Gerry Duggan is an exceptional writer who skillfully tied all the storylines together seamlessly.

Now, the run of “Invincible Iron Man” has concluded. Fortunately, Duggan delivered a fitting finish for Marvel Comics fans. Here’s a summary of the crucial points from issue 20 and the future plans for the Iron Avenger:

Feilong’s fate

In “Invincible Iron Man” issues 18 and 19, Tony Stark overcame Kelvin Heng, also known as Feilong. He secretly transported him to a hidden location. In the following issue, number 20, it’s disclosed that they had gone to Arrako. Tony, mistrusting the judicial system due to his adversary’s wealth and influence, chose to imprison himself voluntarily instead of relying on the courts.

It’s astonishing that Tony Stark, who labels himself a futurist, continues to conceal information without foreseeing the potential consequences.

Tony Stark is rich again

After living in poverty for years, Tony Stark has regained his wealth, a surprising turn of events orchestrated by Emma Frost. Using her telepathic abilities, she engaged in what Stark referred to as an underhanded business deal – essentially manipulating the stock market. Fortunately, the targets of her deceit were criminal organizations such as A.I.M., Dario Agger, and Tombstone.

In simpler terms, having Tony Stark back as a billionaire is similar to Bruce Wayne regaining his fortune in the DC Comics universe (refer to “Batman” No. 149 by Chip Zdarsky for context). It’s intriguing when wealthy superheroes aren’t dependent on their money, allowing them to undergo character development. Yet, it feels natural when they have ample resources at their disposal. This financial security enables them to manufacture extravagant inventions without financial constraints.

Married no more

Emma Frost and Tony Stark’s union wasn’t an officially recognized marriage. With Emma using an alias, their clandestine alliance versus Orchis was facilitated through this deception. Unfortunately, the arrangement couldn’t sustain itself. Despite their deep feelings for one another, Emma required solitude to rejuvenate. She parted ways with Tony, leaving him a vast fortune in return. He remained the source of joy during her most challenging experiences. Although their relationship was cut short, they can cherish the happiness and affection they shared, however brief it may have been.

West Coast Avengers

In issue 19 of “Invincible Iron Man,” Tony Stark and Rhodey suggested the possibility of the West Coast Avengers reforming and collaborating with villains for redemption. Rhodey believed he could facilitate this process, as some criminals expressed a desire to change their ways. This idea was confirmed in issue 20. Rhodey mentioned having a long list of names, implying potential new team members, to which Tony replied, “I don’t need to know them if you do.”

In Tony Stark’s latest entry, he casually proposed, “Perhaps we’re forming the new West Coast Avengers. Keep it under wraps for now.” Keep an eye on TopMob for updates on this development.
