Fans of The Punisher now know when Frank Castle will be back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the news is welcome after the issues with the Daredevil: Born Again series. Marvel has a lot planned for 2026, bringing back some of its most popular franchises. A major part of this is Jon Bernthal finally making his first appearance as the Punisher on the big screen.
Frank Castle, also known as the Punisher, appears in the Spider-Man: Brand New Day storyline, and a trailer hinted at a lively interaction between Jon Bernthal’s Punisher and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. But before that, the Punisher will get his own Marvel special presentation. Marvel has finally announced when fans can expect to see the Punisher return.

Marvel has released a couple of special presentations so far: Werewolf by Night (October 7, 2022) and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (November 25, 2022). Now, in 2026, they’re bringing back this format with The Punisher: One Last Kill, starring Jon Bernthal. Bernthal also helped write the special, which will be available to stream on Disney+ starting May 12th.
Jon Bernthal will have a significant creative role in the 2026 Marvel Cinematic Universe release featuring The Punisher. The project reunites him with director Reinaldo Marcus Green, who previously directed Bernthal in HBO’s crime series We Own This City. Together, they’re developing the next chapter of Frank Castle’s story, picking up after his escape from Kingpin’s prison in the first season of Daredevil: Born Again.
How The Punisher: One Last Kill Makes Up For Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Disappointment
After really enjoying the first season of the new Daredevil show, I, like a lot of fans, fully expected Jon Bernthal to be back as the Punisher in season two of Daredevil: Born Again. But then, when Marvel announced he’d be in Spider-Man: Brand New Day and getting his own special presentation, it started to seem less and less likely that would actually happen.
Vincent D’Onofrio, who plays Wilson Fisk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has explained why Jon Bernthal’s Punisher won’t be appearing in the second season of Daredevil: Born Again. According to D’Onofrio, Bernthal was already committed to two other MCU projects scheduled for 2026, making it impossible for him to film scenes for the Daredevil series. The show’s creators would have included Frank Castle in the story if Bernthal’s schedule had allowed.
It’s understandable, but still a letdown that the Punisher isn’t appearing in the second season of Daredevil: Born Again. However, with The Punisher: One Last Kill coming out shortly after the season finale, and being listed in the official schedule for Daredevil: Born Again season 2, there’s a possibility these two stories might be linked.
The ending of Daredevil: Born Again season 2 might set up the events for The Punisher: One Last Kill. However, even if that doesn’t happen, the recent Marvel announcement is good news for fans of The Punisher, especially since they won’t have to wait long to see the character back in the MCU after the new season concludes.
