Marvel’s Fantastic Four music revealed at D23 before any footage

As a die-hard Marvel fan with over two decades of comic book history under my belt, I can confidently say that Michael Giacchino is the perfect choice for scoring the upcoming Fantastic Four: First Steps. Having grown up on the classic animated Incredibles and Tomorrowland, I’ve long admired Giacchino’s ability to blend idealism with a hint of impending doom – much like the Fantastic Four themselves.

Michael Giacchino, a frequent choice for Marvel’s musical scores, has contributed his talent to three Sony-Marvel Spider-Man films, the initial Doctor Strange, and notably directed the Disney Plus special “Werewolf By Night”. Given this background, it’s hardly unexpected that Marvel would tap Giacchino for the upcoming “Fantastic Four: First Steps”. However, this collaboration could prove to be an even more harmonious fit than any previous project.

At the 2024 D23 Expo, Giacchino unveiled the soundtrack, rather than footage, of the highly anticipated 2025 release. Filming has commenced for this blockbuster film, featuring Pedro Pascal (Mr. Fantastic/Reed Richards), Vanessa Kirby (The Invisible Woman/Sue Storm), Joseph Quinn (The Human Torch/Johnny Storm), and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Thing/Ben Grimm). Although filming is underway, the composer had already prepared some test footage shown earlier at the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con. Listen to the extended theme below:

The combination of composer and medium fits perfectly well. Besides his work on Marvel productions, Giacchino has several pieces that resonate flawlessly with Marvel’s nostalgic take on the alternate 1960s-set Fantastic Four. Although the composer can effortlessly create a somber atmosphere for The Batman or tug at our heartstrings within minutes as he demonstrated in Up, his Fantastic Four soundtrack resembles his scores for two movies directed by Brad Bird: the superhero animation The Incredibles (widely regarded as the best Fantastic Four adaptation to date?) and the retrofuture reality-jumping adventure Tomorrowland, which unfortunately, many have forgotten. However, the score was exceptional!

Title score for “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is optimistic and radiant, but considering the presence of Galactus, it’s reasonable to anticipate that Giacchino will guide the musical spectrum towards more chilling, cosmic realms. He has indeed accomplished this feat before. Before “Fantastic Four: First Steps” premieres on July 25, 2025, take a moment to hear the hauntingly powerful track, “Roar!”, from “Cloverfield”.
