Being a superhero fan is great right now! We’ve started seeing the first movies and shows in the new DCU, both in cinemas and on HBO Max. James Gunn’s Superman film was a success, and a sequel is already in the works. Many believe Brainiac will be the villain, and Chukwudi Iwuji – who has worked with Gunn before and is known for his roles in Marvel projects – has now addressed the rumors that he’s being considered for the part.
Superman: Man of Tomorrow was announced in September, and James Gunn revealed the script was finished. He also shared a picture of the script, which sparked more speculation about Brainiac being involved. In a conversation with The Movie Dweeb, Iwuji responded to the discussions by saying:
Would I be interested in doing this? If James called me today, without a doubt. Is it an appealing role? Actually, you’re the twelfth person to bring it up. So, naturally, I checked it out online and thought, ‘Wow, this person seems great.’ Given the chance, I’d definitely take it.
This is encouraging news for fans who want him to get the part. However, it doesn’t necessarily mean he’s accepted the role yet. He initially said “no” but then corrected himself and gave the statement mentioned earlier. It’s obvious he’s eager to work with Gunn again, after their successful collaborations on both Peacemaker Season 1 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

HBO Max: Plans begin at $9.99 per month

During the same interview, Chukwudi Iwuji shared why his initial reaction was to decline the offer to play Brainiac in the first set of DCU projects (Gods and Monsters). He playfully referenced previously denying his involvement as the High Evolutionary in Guardians 3, stating:
My initial ‘no’ was simply to indicate that James hadn’t done something. I want to assure you, I wasn’t being dishonest. I sincerely apologize for any previous lies, but I was forced to because of a contractual obligation. They would have arrested and deported me if I hadn’t. However, I’m not lying now. There are absolutely no connections to Brainiac, and I’m telling the truth.
So, that’s the latest. Iwuji has been following the discussions about the Brainiac character, and it sounds like he’d be interested in playing the villain in the next Superman movie. However, he’s also stated that he hasn’t had any conversations with Gunn about the role – not yet, anyway.
James Gunn has hinted that Man of Tomorrow will feature Superman and Lex Luthor temporarily setting aside their rivalry and teaming up against a shared threat. Many believe Brainiac will be the planet-level danger that forces this unlikely alliance, and audiences are eagerly anticipating the film.
Superman: Man of Tomorrow is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 9th, 2027. Until then, you can enjoy James Gunn’s previous film on HBO Max and explore how it ties into Peacemaker Season 2.
