Marvel’s Agatha All Along is secretly a mock-HBO detective drama – just not for long enough

As a long-time fan of Marvel’s intricate storytelling and Kathryn Hahn’s captivating performances, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the debut of “Agatha All Along.” Having binge-watched the first four episodes, I must say that this spin-off feels like a delightful dip into the enchanting world of horror and fantasy, much like diving headfirst into a bubbling cauldron of bewitching potions.

Initially, Agatha All Along introduces us to a gloomy, damp forested area, where a worn-out, disillusioned detective and her companion are compelled to venture into the countryside to explore the puzzling case of an unknown woman who was discovered deceased beside a road.

So far, the series has a feel reminiscent of shows like “Mare of Easttown”, “True Detective”, or “The Killing”. However, this isn’t a performance by Kate Winslet or Jodie Foster. Instead, we have Kathryn Hahn brilliantly portraying a sarcastic, worn-out detective in a series titled “Agnes of Westview”, who is known for her gum-chewing demeanor and burnt-out attitude.

As a devoted admirer, I can attest that Hahn’s profound acting talents displayed in “I Know This Much Is True” prove she thrives on weightier roles. Interestingly enough, it is this depth that truly illuminates her performance in “Agatha All Along“, much like the radiance emanating from a certain witch’s fingers.

However, it’s not just about serious crime dramas. Playful elements echo classic procedural shows, reminiscent of the best satirical moments from series like WandaVision, that took us back to the early days of Disney+ in 2020 – making it seem as if those 1950s Americana parodies were as distant as the actual 1950s themselves.

The opening credits, reminiscent of “The Wire,” and the fictional source material suggesting the show-within-a-show is based on the Danish series “Wadavisdysen,” present “Agatha All Along” at its most stylish, as demonstrated by the four episodes we’ve watched.

Initially, Agnes maintains a calm demeanor, but over time she grows increasingly loud, frustrated, and theatrical, even bordering on comical. Then, when enigmatic FBI agent Rio Vidal, portrayed by Aubrey Plaza, enters the scene investigating local matters (quite unexpectedly), the situation gradually evolves into something reminiscent of a Marvel Cinematic Universe plot.

Agnes relentlessly pesters a local librarian for details about a secretively stolen book, the Darkhold, only to find it reduced to ashes before she could interrogate a reluctant witness, Joe Locke, aggressively. In her downtime, she turns to alcohol. Plaza humorously remarks, “It’s commonly believed that a woman can’t excel as a detective while maintaining a personal life.

After a while, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) returns to its traditional ‘real world’ setting and the familiar, over-the-top superhero style, complete with enjoyable moments. While it was inevitable, we can’t help but wish that ‘Agatha All Along’ might have delved deeper into more mature and contemporary TV genres for a more intriguing exploration. However, Marvel isn’t likely to transform into HBO-like content anytime soon.

In a similar vein, the eerily entertaining “Werewolf By Night” by Marvel drew inspiration from the grisly, monochrome aesthetic of the Universal Monster movies, showcasing a chilling horror storyline in its standalone release on Disney+ in 2022.

In an exclusive interview with Digital Spy, Executive Producer Mary Livanos explained that they aimed to create a production that carries the spiritual essence of “WandaVision”, but this time focusing entirely on Agatha. Consequently, it presents a fresh tone and a different array of references altogether.

While WandaVision honors the classic era of TV with various sitcom styles, we now delve into the glory days of horror and fantasy.

Livanos stated on Digital Spy: “Every writer brought ideas drawing from witches, fantasy, and horror – elements we all adore. They were blended together, and if you’re fond of these genres or their sub-categories, there are undoubtedly Easter Eggs that will delight you, scattered throughout the series.

Initially, the series seems to blend various genres across its first four installments, but it appears to be more about exploring different fashion trends and music styles (some of which are quite catchy, similar to ‘Agatha All Along’). It doesn’t quite feel like traditional TV parodies in the same sense.

It’s okay if your work isn’t filled with quick cuts like TikTok videos, and you can definitely see hints of shows like Charmed, Hocus Pocus, and The Wizard of Oz in it. However, since WandaVision was presented in a unique format, it’s challenging not to feel that it falls short in some ways.

The show titled “Agatha All Along” is part of a three-piece series, culminating with Paul Bettany’s “Vision Quest“. Notably, this upcoming series will reintroduce Ultron, the longstanding antagonist from previous series, in some shape or form, due to the involvement of James Spader in the cast.

In another part of the series, Aubrey Plaza proves a fantastic fit in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, maintaining her characteristic dry humor. Meanwhile, Joe Locke delivers an earnest and enigmatic performance. Regrettably, the broader group of witches doesn’t receive enough character depth that we’d prefer, making it challenging to establish a strong connection with them, given the numerous characters involved.

In Agatha’s current season, we’ve watched through four episodes. That means there are five more episodes left for us to watch before the series finale. These remaining episodes could reveal some exciting twists that will captivate fans, such as unmasking the true identity of the enigmatic ‘Teen’ character played by Joe Locke.

Don’t anticipate a sequel to “WandaVision“. However, if you appreciate a musical, quirky, spooky, Halloween-themed production similar to “Hocus Pocus“, then the character Agatha is definitely worth watching. We’re hoping that future episodes will recapture the magic and creativity that initially captivated us in “WandaVision“.

Agatha All Along debuts its initial two episodes on Wednesday, September 18th on Disney+ within the United States, and on Thursday, September 19th in the United Kingdom. Additional episodes will be released every week, with a special double episode for the final installment.
