Disney+’s leader has likened one of their popular animated shows to a surprising science fiction classic.
Bryan Andrews, the writer and director of Marvel’s *Marvel Zombies*, described the show’s cliffhanger ending as a bold move. He compared it to *The Empire Strikes Back*, explaining that the best stories leave audiences with a big question and wanting more. He hopes the ending will inspire viewers to reach out to Marvel and ask for a continuation of the story.
Inspired by the popular zombie-themed episode from the first season of *What If…?*, *Marvel Zombies* takes place after a massive zombie outbreak has destroyed a version of the Marvel Universe. The series brings back many familiar faces from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Iman Vellani reprising her role as Ms. Marvel and leading the story. Other MCU stars like Dominique Thorne, Hailee Steinfeld, Florence Pugh, and Paul Rudd also return to voice their characters, including the actress known as the Queen of the Dead within the *Marvel Zombies* world.
The new series *Marvel Zombies* premiered on September 24th, exciting many fans, though reviews were mixed. While most critics and viewers praised the action, speed, and acting, the unexpected ending sparked debate. Currently, Rotten Tomatoes gives the series a 64% ‘Fresh’ rating based on 33 professional reviews. Viewers seem to like it even more, with a 72% approval rating on the site’s ‘Popcornmeter’.
What the Future Could Hold for the MCU’s Marvel Zombies
Brad Winderbaum, an executive producer on *Marvel Zombies*, discussed the show’s potential future, saying he and a colleague frequently explore the rich history and numerous stories within the Marvel universe for inspiration, particularly drawing from the original comics. He also indicated that the show’s return for another season will likely depend on how viewers respond and whether people continue to subscribe to Disney Plus and watch the series.
Marvel Zombies is currently available for streaming on Disney+.
