Marvel Studios is planning to address a long-standing issue with Fox’s X-Men movies in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. This film will be a major event for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, marking the first time a full team of mutants will officially join the Avengers. Fans can also expect the X-Men characters to be much more faithful to their comic book origins when they finally appear in the MCU, with significant improvements to their portrayals.
The latest trailer for Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday highlighted the return of the X-Men, characters previously featured in 20th Century Fox’s films. It showcased Sir Patrick Stewart reprising his role as Professor X, Sir Ian McKellen as Magneto, and concluded with James Marsden returning as Cyclops.

Summers appears briefly, dramatically lifting his visor and unleashing a powerful red energy blast from his eyes. The scene shows him wearing his classic blue and yellow X-Men uniform as the mansion behind him begins to fall apart, with a Sentinel looming nearby.
While it’s not yet known exactly what Denzel Washington’s character will do in his first Marvel movie, the trailer suggests Cyclops will be a major player among the film’s mutants. This is a shift from the original X-Men films, where James Marsden’s Cyclops often played a supporting role to characters like Professor X and Wolverine.
Cyclops is usually shown as the leader of the X-Men in comic books, defeating enemies with his powerful optic blasts. There’s also speculation that he’ll play a major role when the X-Men join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, likely after the current Multiverse Saga and once the actors known for playing mutants finish their roles in the Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars movies.
The next Avengers movie, titled Avengers: Doomsday, is set to be the fifth installment featuring Earth’s Mightiest Heroes from Marvel Studios, and the third film in Phase 6 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s been confirmed that Cyclops, played by Marsden, will be one of 29 characters appearing, uniting the Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four. The film will center around a multiversal battle against Doctor Doom, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr., and is scheduled for release on December 18, 2026.
Cyclops’ Glorious Return to Action in Avengers: Doomsday

Although Cyclops wasn’t poorly portrayed in the early X-Men films, he consistently received less attention than other characters. Compared to Professor X, played by Patrick Stewart, and Wolverine, played by Hugh Jackman, the comic book leader of the X-Men often felt secondary. He had very little screen time – less than five minutes in X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) – before his character was killed off.
Although we’ve only seen a small amount of footage, the fact that Cyclops is one of just three heroes featured in the trailer suggests he’ll have a significant part to play in Doomsday. With over six mutants confirmed to be in the movie, James Marsden appears poised to finally receive more attention and a bigger role than he had in his previous four Marvel films.
As a critic, I have to say bringing James Marsden back for this Marvel team-up feels absolutely right. This is the first time we’re seeing the X-Men truly collide with the Avengers, and Marsden’s been a fan favorite as Cyclops for years. He’s set to become one of the longest-serving actors in superhero movie history – alongside Wesley Snipes! – and the trailer clearly signals he’ll be a major player, sharing the spotlight with heavy hitters like Professor X and Magneto. It looks like he’s getting a significant amount of screen time and a real story arc, which is fantastic.
It’s still almost a year until the movie Doomsday comes out, so fans will probably need to wait for the official trailer – and a look at the whole cast – to find out what the X-Men will be doing. Until then, excitement will keep growing, especially to see how significant Cyclops’ role will be in what’s shaping up to be the biggest superhero film of Marsden’s career.
